RE: https://climatejustice.social/@briefecology/117495807003430418 Wildfire is a complex ecological and social phenomenon. Our latest issue explores it from multiple perspectives, and I think this kind of holistic interpretation is critical to fully grapple with the issue; as catastrophic wildfires will assuredly continue into the foreseeable future.

It’s true that I’m leaving academia, but I am in no way leaving academic work. Higher ed in the US has been entirely captured by corporate capitalist interest, which means the need for critical pedagogy and research has never been greater. I will continue that work through @briefecology@climatejustice.social and elsewhere.

The simplest way to tax billionaires is to appropriate the businesses they own. Nationalizing the fossil fuel industry would create a mechanism to wind down its operations. Industries like healthcare and education should be public. Amazon should be a national service. Internet access should be a public utility.

There are few things that so perfectly represent the capitalist mode of production as generative AI. It’s theft. It’s plagiarism. It’s an attack on labor. It destroys the environment. It produces junk. It’s harmful to consume. It concentrates wealth. In short, it’s a catastrophe for society.

The same system that exploits the working class also exploits our ecosystems. Profit-seeking extracts maximum value from labor while giving as little back to the workers as possible. At the same time, profit-seeking extracts maximum energy and biomass from ecosystems while giving as little back to the environment as possible. Capitalism is unsustainable for both society and the planet.

Ecology is a consistently misunderstood discipline. Often it's reduced to an environmental sentiment that doesn't reflect much more than a nature-loving outlook. On the other side, while ecology is concerned with the scientific understanding of organic life's patterns, scientists often omit any political, social, cultural, or ethical aspects in their explanations. These are serious flaws, because society developed from nature, and thus one can only be understood in the context of the...

Imagine a country calling itself a democracy but it’s Election Day isn’t a federal holiday

It’s unreasonable to assume that the institutions which capital gave rise to will ever save society from capitalism. Hierarchical, extractive, and undemocratic organization perpetuates the same domination of human over human that it does in placing society over nature. An ecological society requires new, cooperative and democratic institutions.

In ancient Athens they had a process for banishing potential tyrants from the city. Athenians had learned the hard way that threats to democracy cannot be tolerated and, to maintain the people's power, they removed those who would challenge it in favor of oligarchy. There are lessons to be learned from that.

A truly ecological society would be able to reconcile its ethical obligations to the environment with its own needs to sustain itself.

RE: https://climatejustice.social/@briefecology/117337605876345514 This was a fascinating issue to put together. Waste is so ever-present in capitalist society that we rarely stop to think about what it actually is, or what it could be instead.

RE: https://climatejustice.social/@briefecology/117337605876345514 More scientific research is published now than at any previous point in history, and yet the majority of it never makes its way to the general public. This is only getting worse now that the billionaires have completely taken over legacy media. @briefecology@climatejustice.social is an attempt to improve this situation, by focusing on recent ecological research and exploring how to improve nature-society relations.

Call me paranoid but the main lackey of an authoritarian regime purging one fifth of military leadership ahead of a nationwide election seems not great

You are not overreacting to the climate crisis. Your exhaustion from capitalist exploitation is not a personal failure. Your inability to meet society’s standards of perfection does not reflect your value. These are lies meant to keep us complacent so that the system’s machinery can continue.

The insidious thing about capitalist realism is that it instills in people this belief that our exploitative, unequal, unjust, competitive, and antagonistic society is the best we can get. That this is the only “real” option and anything else would be worse. But this is a deterministic cynicism that actually creates the conditions it claims are innate.

But on the other hand, I really want to.
