I'm seeing a lot of takes on this in my circles, here's mine:
I would spend $300 on building a thing before I spent $80 on buying it. I end up with a product that works exactly how I want, that I can trust to not secretly be fucking me over, is repairable in the future, and most importantly IT'S FUN TO MAKE THINGS

@brett Preach, brother! Building things and fixing things are primordial itches, as built into us from the start as hunger or climbing mountains or drawing or composing.

@brett yes, but also no. Depends on what the thing is I guess? The electronics I build myself tend to suck. The wooden things are a mixed bag (but if I could buy those, I would have done) I suck at anything case/enclosure/chassis.
