@cassey@ottawa.place this is how civilization ends, not with a bang, but with a prompt. what scares me most here is my flashbacks to when the NRC endorsed my bid to channel schoolboard efforts and funds into opensource tools, but the board preempted my submission by hiring a Microsoft partner to 'evaluate' the candidates. Guess who got the post. The dominant excuse is "to prepare students for the 'real world' work environment" although what they taught of M$ warez in 1996 no longer exist. Today, now, here in our nation's capital, the same excuse applied to fostering mass ignorance while root-toot-tooting the fascists surveillance devices because, well, that's the future we collectively hope for our kids, Amazon Prime for EVERYONE!

articles like this one like to claim AI and device use are an absolute must in public school classrooms because of the accessibility improvements provided by things like text-to-speech. I am not disputing people with reading or visual disabilities may benefit from those! but a lot of kids don't have reading or visual processing disabilities, and those are the kids that are being described in all those other articles, about how university students and recent college grads seem not to have the ability to sustain attention on long texts, or to comprehend complex texts they are supposed to read. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/back-to-school-techlash-9.7327303

@cassey@ottawa.place I learned to proofread other people's texts while I was in high school. I'm so glad I have that skill.

@cassey@ottawa.place absolutely disgusted with the provincially-controlled school-board at how eager they are to stuff the latest foreign commercial experiments into the schools we pay for.
