RE: https://grapheneos.social/@GrapheneOS/117282080803799576 Android 17 is the first since version 3.x to add new APIs without releasing to the AOSP. Why would you do that Google? What's with roadblocks for other open source projects? Android would never have been so popular in the first place if it had not been open source and I think Google wants to keep it close source now. So now you have delayed source code release, 3rd party dev verification and list is now endless.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social Thinking of a startup myself, I realized some closedness seemed like an immediate solution for sustainable monetization sometimes. It's almost a personal conviction to pursue total openness while looking for somewhat of a future guarantee.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social There would be recourse if it had a copyleft license. You have to rely on goodwill with permissive licenses. They got what they wanted from the system, and don't need you anymore.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social They think this will make consumers trust Google more. What it actually does is give the whole #Android ecosystem a bad reputation. People who were #deGoogle -ing because of spying are not suddenly going to go back to Google because they perceive "better security". Clearly Google thinks this and they are ridiculous for it.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social They must've realised that nowadays everyone depends on either Android or iOS & since Apple won't be opening their ecosystem anytime soon & Linux phones are nowhere near daily-drivable, Google might aswell close theirs down to exert more control over its community
