@benroyce@mastodon.social do you think the candidate will learn from it? If they put the rules of the work place on the web - all can learn from it. But if it's not a clear rule - he may even don't understand what is happend.

@benroyce@mastodon.social They also sometimes have a female and a male interviewer separately. If the candidate talks down to one and boasts to the other, he gets turfed. One place I worked, you got a couple of morning interviews, then you got taken out to lunch. The morning interviewers huddled and decided if you got afternoon interviews or a "thanks, we'll let you know" when you got back from lunch.

@benroyce@mastodon.social not just tech bro! This happened to me a couple of months ago, and it was a young guy we were interviewing, and really right on/progressive, too, in terms of what he was saying. He directed everything we all asked at my male colleague, who is undeniably lovely but in hierarchical terms was the most junior member of our panel.

  • @benroyce@mastodon.social I lived in a muslim community. Women in this community don't like men to be looking at them, which made me hesitant to maintain eye contact with women in general. I'm also bad with eye contact, which happens with people with ASD.

@benroyce@mastodon.social oh dear. I had cringe flashbacks from when my landlord would only talk handywork stuff to me (a Smol Twink™) when my flatmate (Slightly taller woman) was very adamantly bearing said handywork tools in her hands and talking to him. It was. So very weird until we understood exactly what was going on.

@benroyce@mastodon.social Really? That's nuts, I got taught that in an interview you make an effort to address everyone there. It's an _interview_, they're all deciding to hire you or not. Maybe I should write a book on how to mask like a human. But then again, some techbro might read it, so perhaps not.

  • @benroyce@mastodon.social In one company, we had an all-female interview round, because a lot of men behave like assholes when they're in the room only with women.

@benroyce@mastodon.social Great. New vague stress to add to the interview process. Should I be talking to everyone when I answer questions or just the asker? What if I forget to look to different people and I've landed on the wrong one that makes me appear sexist? Can I look at no one? One of my goals when I interview is to make the person comfortable and assure them there are no trick questions. When you're having a comfortable conversation with someone you'll often get a sense of who they are.

@benroyce@mastodon.social I'm a fan of the "Be nice to the person who brings in the coffee and snacks" test, because an old boss pulled it a lot and it cut out soooo many assholes. Start the interview with one person, either sex. Second, also either sex, enters five minutes later, with snacks and drinks, apologizing up and down. Then see how the candidate reacts when the second person sits and asks a question.

@benroyce@mastodon.social I liked this at first glance, but... Candidate: (if they're a good engineer) likely has an introvert side, and in a stressful position due to needing job, and maybe even a bit of social anxiety. Company: treats interview as an adversarial rather than collegial dynamic, tag-teams candidate with left-right battery, botches experiment (though good intentions), using personnel who are neither social scientists nor actors, uses flawed secret litmus test to deny employment to someone. 😀

@benroyce@mastodon.social not just tech interviews. My wife grew up in a GM family. When we were choosing a car for her, the salesman kept directing questions to e, even though I would turn to her and let her answer. We did not buy a car from that dealer…

@benroyce@mastodon.social I see a lot of replies about national origin, culture, religion, social anxiety, introversion, neurodiversity, etc., etc. But, like, can women hold jobs in the country you're interviewing in? Then talking to women is a core job skill. "Can you perform the core duties of your job with or without reasonable accommodation?" is what the statement on the application usually says. "I need a man present at all times to address my responses to" would not be a reasonable accommodation.

@benroyce@mastodon.social it's a nice demonstration of hierarchy in Mastodon culture, what gets advanced as an excuse to treat women like shit. we must consider everyone else's feelings and remote possibilities before we can think about not treating women like shit. it's almost like people are so used to treating women like shit that it just recedes into the background of their normal existence. but did they ever consider...not treating women like shit

@benroyce@mastodon.social I've used this. Another good technique is to throw in a question like “What have you done in previous jobs to help make your workplace safe and welcoming to people from diverse backgrounds?” You're not looking for any specific answer: they may not have held a leadership role, or their previous workplaces might have been toxic places where they had to keep their head down. What you're looking for is just whether they take the question in their stride and try to answer it. A good answer is great, but a mediocre answer is perfectly acceptable. So long as it doesn't make them obviously uncomfortable. Any questions that implicitly assumes a diverse workplace is good will do, but it's best if it's open-ended so any decent person can think of something to say.

@benroyce@mastodon.social @jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net Yes, it's a technique that we also use at $dayjob where possible (i.e. if we're hiring for a specialist role, we'll include a generalist female interviewer, and prime them with appropriate technical questions).
