So then I nuked the Mint partition and replaced it with Kubuntu and honestly that installer was *so much better*. This is what I was expecting - a nice smooth modern kinda dummy-proof installer. Click next and answer a few questions and go. Very smooth. Anyway, it's running Kubuntu now. So then I tried the AirPods pairing experiment and it worked first try - no config files and no restarting services. So, for now anyway, Kubuntu is the winner. That's my story.

@bigzaphod@mastodon.social I have no idea what any of this meant but I completely enjoyed it. Thank you.

@bigzaphod@mastodon.social I’m pretty sure the fractional scaling thing is KDE-specific rather than Ubuntu-specific, so you’d probably have a similar experience with KDE running on Fedora or Mint. I’d also be curious to hear if you have a better experience with AoE2 on Kubuntu or Fedora; either should have newer gaming-related packages than Mint, I think. (Unless you’re using the LTS version, the Kubuntu version you installed was released three days ago.)

@bigzaphod@mastodon.social Linux is still not ready for the average computer user (without someone who can help), but the various official Ubuntu variants, including Kubuntu, probably come the closest. A far cry from my spending literally days downloading dozens of floppy images to do an install, and then spending at least a day changing settings and recompiling the kernel to get everything working. Man, I’m getting old…
