The phrase "silent and inexplicable" has been in my head a lot lately. Against an indifferent background universe, or worse, a universe where the powers that be seem deranged and often hostile with no explanation forthcoming, the failure of human societies to shield people from the unfortunate and ineffable stands out. What is society for otherwise?
