Humans being irrational in an irrational universe is probably inevitable but it does leave a lot of bodies in its wake.

Human societies seem like they can absorb any shock (that doesn't destroy them outright) as long as it doesn't fundamentally upset the hierarchy of power. Societies are flexible. The hierarchies are not.
