@briankrebs@infosec.exchange tbf most arguments I see from the anti AI crowd don't make sense - it fits that they're seeing information pushed by bad actors and then that (highly skewed) information becomes some sort of "truth" and if you try to correct it you get called various ... names. There are definitely weird permissions given in the US for some planned data centers - but the US isn't the whole world. Here in Sweden we built data centers for European AI that runs on renewable energy and does not use potable water for cooling.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange US should invest in home datacenters 😇

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange To be fair, the folks who hold that irrational ground tend to see *everyone* who isn't them as gullible tools. One's worth is based on whether their hand fits the handle.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange China seems to be creating better products than us, so good that the US is making people go import them personally rather than allow them to be marketed. I'm lowkey hoping the lazy billionaires here lose.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange The datacenter-loving broligarchs are a far greater threat than China. The Chinese government has embraced capitalism while directing the benefits towards the Chinese people. Meanwhile, the American broligarchs have adopted the ugliest possible caricature of capitalism focused on swindling investors, crushing workers and consumers, undermining democratic institutions, destroying the environment, and concentrating wealth and power in the hands of a few sociopaths.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange This discourse lands rather differently here in Scotland (where the government is considering a proposed moratorium on all new data centre construction) …

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange If China wants to destroy themselves with AI, that's their choice and their destiny. We don't need to follow that lead into Hell.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange I won't be even a tiny bit surprised if China is faking their entire AI industry, tricking the US into a race with itself towards financial collapse.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange There's a precedent for rationales like "winning the AI race with China." I once heard that during the cold war, some senator asked why they should fund some nuclear physics research that tried to create new elements. The winning argument was (as the story goes), "Do you want the next element discovered to be named Stalinium?"

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange also note we’re not allowed to try and win the public transit race with china or the train system race with china or the solar panel race with china or the building housing race with china

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange The big problem is honesty. They do not recognize the impacts that they bring. Sure, they'll pay for the power that they use. However, who pays for the extra power generation capacity that the public utility will have to build? It will be financed on the back of every citizen. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with Data Centers, if your eyes are open, you have real data and can protect the public from the impact on power, water and the environment. They have the "unmitigated gall" to call these projects green (boy, please!) @pluralistic@mamot.fr says that Data Centers have a useful life of 3 years....another unaccounted factor. They cure cancer, Erectile Dysfunction, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. They not only grow back hair but will grow back limbs. https://governor.mo.gov/press-releases/archive/amazon-investing-10-billion-montgomery-county

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange That's always the excuse when there are no arguments left. "That's X propaganda!" If you're really so sure it's propaganda, explain how that alleged propaganda is wrong.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange Ever since the Y2K bug debacle I'd hoped the term "lessons learnt" would be struck from the dictionary... Oh well, at least I've learnt one lesson.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange I can only see it as a bad faith argument because the same people seem to be for defunding scientific research in all other areas including on cancer treatments and climate change, support dodge in dismantling USAID and firing NOAA, FEMA, and FDA staff for which we are already seeing repercussions, spread anti-vax propoganda or are against mRNA vaccines in general and don’t make efforts to understand basic scientific principles. Meanwhile, ALPRs, such as Flock cameras, are proliferating and tech privacy is a big concern, yet the same people aren’t concerned about the US being impacted by other negative policies, such as China’s surveillance issues, lack of personal privacy, National Guard being deployed to US cities, or ICE hiding their identities. In fact, it feels very much like the people saying that ICE needs to wear masks because people might doxx them.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange China already won the AI race. Chinese companies released several open weights models anybody can download and run on their own machines for free which are good enough for most purposes. They figured out how to make models that are much smaller yet not significantly worse. Meanwhile, American AI companies are burning money running humongous proprietary models, and everybody is just waiting for the bubble to burst. Besides, China will be the last remaining superpower very soon. Putin has been ruining the Russian army trying to take Ukraine, now Trump is ruining the American forces by waging war against Iran. Meanwhile, China is building weapons and army bases, as seen on satellite images.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange History should have taught it the hard way. Whenever some king or politician asks you to support the country, against a possible foreign enemy, you're most likely gaslighted. Well, it should. It hadn't, almost always.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange "The implication is that people who oppose new data centers are both anti-American and gullible tools." Which is hilarious, since the pro-AI people are also the people pumping up the Metaverse, NFTs, etc. They are proven to be gullible.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange I hope all the AI bros in this thread defending this fascist technology, are willing to risk their necks. The AI companies are creating a huge disruption into many fields of work. Making people lose jobs, and careers (damagin families support) because a bunch of rich CEO doesn't want to pay workers. They want electronic slaves that dont need to be payed, even if they don't work properly. You are going to be treated like ICE is treating many non-white MAGA supporters. You will be kicked out the job markets, and you will deserve it. I will be glad to see all of you losing your jobs, your money. Not able to find a new one in years, not able to support your families, or pay your bills or keep your houses. That will teach you something. The rich don't produce anything. Is the working class that produces material goods and social equality and stability. Nobody sells dollars by the cent. And the CEOs of OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft or Google are a buch of egomaniac fascist. Smoke sellers. You are giving them all the power to destroy all society. So let's hope ou are the first on the line to fall for it.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange There's something happening here. But what it is ain't exactly clear🤔 There's a man🪖 with a gun :OttGun: over there A-telling me I got to beware. :ablobcateyeroll: I think it's time we stop Children, what's that sound? Everybody look data centers going down There's battle lines being drawn And nobody's right if everybody's wrong Young people speaking their minds Are gettin' so much resistance from behind🎵 🎼
