Can't stop thinking about the 250 THOUSAND trees #Google chopped down in Finland without permission, for another goddamned AI data center. As far as I'm concerned we've reached the point where this garbage isn't worth killing a single tree.

BREAKING: Claims of massive PHP exploits being announced tomorrow with 10/10 severity affecting all versions 5 through 8 on websites (apache, etc.) blogs (wordpress, etc). ... etc. There's a lot of talk but no details. Apparently those details and patches, where available -- and apparently only newer versions will get patches -- will arrive Wednesday morning. That's all I know.

Today is Ray Bradbury's "There Will Come Soft Rains" Nuclear War Day First published in 1950, Ray Bradbury's short story "There Will Come Soft Rains" describes a single house miraculously standing after nuclear attacks have destroyed the city (and presumably global civilization), the house still going about its automated duties for a time, unaware of what has occurred. Yes, remarkably prescient, and unlike much science-fiction, damned accurate on his predicted dating...

#Amazon users are livid over the Alexa AI Misinformation Slop Invasion features now contaminating many searches on the Amazon web site and app. This feature cannot be disabled completely without using 3rd party extensions, which on general principles I would not recommend on a shopping site where payment credentials and other personal information can appear. The Alexa sidebar replete with useless AI slop comments about your search and your prior purchase history can be closed, but will likely po...

A major utility I deal with recently changed their website and phone customer services ops to an obviously AI-based system that is a serious cluster f*ck. I mean, stuff like claiming phone numbers aren't in the system that have been there for decades, and showing an online DUE amount along with "No payment due". Still possible to reach a human, but it required third-level magic to do so.

When you hear Big Tech CEOs pronounce the future of AI with authority, keep in mind that Jeff Bezos and Steve Jobs thought the Segway scooter was going to revolutionize the world. Jobs said it would be as big as the PC. Now you can go look it up to find out what it was.

I don't ride in robotaxis. Period. I don't care who makes them. The more you know about the failure modes, the more they should scare the hell out of you. The companies endlessly quote statistics claiming they are safer than human drivers, using the classic techniques described in Darrell Huff's "How to Lie with Statistics" -- first printed in 1954, still in print, and still a classic.
