📰 Curb‑cutting Resistance Helped Reshape Tucson’s Urban Ecology 🌧️ Tucson: A man illegally diverted rainwater into streetside basins in 1998. Years later, it transformed a desert neighborhood into a shaded, food‑producing micro‑ecosystem. 🌵 The approach revived Indigenous rain‑harvesting traditions but also caused Tucson to change water management laws to be more nature positive. 🔗 https://www.upworthy.com/in-1998-a-man-illegally-cut-holes-in-a-tucson-street-curb-the-result-changed-the-law/ #SolarPunkSunday #LandscapeEcology #UrbanRestoration #UrbanEcology #RainwaterHarvesting #NativePlants #Sustainability #Environment

  • @joewynne@mindly.social Tuscon had a rather militant environmental movement that totally changed its approach to city planning. Now, despite being in a very similar location and climate to Phoenix, the local temperatures are significantly different-- some nights, when Phoenix can't get below 100 degrees, Tuscon will be 80. All thanks to the green spaces and water catchment etc. The work of activists who battled for change in the 70s is still saving lives. (and now the area is in the sights of some evil bastards who want to build a 3,000-acre data center that would span almost the entire width of the county, and use as much water as the whole city. Where they think that'll be coming from, I got no idea)

@joewynne@mindly.social more areas should be rewilded not concreted or turned into roads for cars.

@joewynne@mindly.social I saw this film last week, https://freelancebeaverdetective.com/ and Pamela Adams who was featured in that film was there to answer questions. She told of ranchers in Eastern Oregon who used to simply shoot beavers in the creeks on their ranches, Then one of them agreed to let beavers to their thing, which helped restore groundwater.. And now the other ranchers are asking "Hey, why do *you * have water and we don't?!" (and beavers can do it in the desert too https://www.greenmatters.com/pn/scientists-reintroduced-beavers-in-utah-desert-to-save-rivers-and-they-did-an-incredible-job) #beavers

  • @joewynne@mindly.social It appears to me that this is a type of Bioswale. Great way to clean and reintroduce water runnoff back into the watertable. #Bioswale https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bioswale?wprov=sfla1

@joewynne@mindly.social Mendoza, in the foothills of the Andes, where Argentine wine comes from, was arid before human occupation. The pre-Inca peoples dug a system of Acequias to channel melting snow down into the settlement and plain. The system is maintained to this day, watering numerous trees in the city as well as the vinegroves. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acequia

@joewynne@mindly.social Thank you so much for sharing this. I'm in a city in the SF Bay Area. Through a quirk of the 1940s implemented road, gutter, sidewalk and storm drain placement in front of my house, I struggle to keep gutter water off my yard as, every fall, it flows to/in my garage. After years of "working" with the city to try to get resolution, I've decided to try to get the city to agree to let me "harvest" that water as a matter of course. This article really helps my case and gives me a pretty much complete set of requirements. The maintenance manual on the Tucson city website for Green Stormwater Infrastructure is a complete homeowner tool to do it. https://assets.tucsonaz.gov/share/gis-docs/s2s/GSI_MX_Guide_-_Second_Edition_-_04-11-2025.pdf Copy the pamphlet, adjust for invasives and plant hardiness zone and I've got my submittal. Fantastic! Again, thank you so much for sharing this. Best.
