Tuscon had a rather militant environmental movement that totally changed its approach to city planning. Now, despite being in a very similar location and climate to Phoenix, the local temperatures are significantly different-- some nights, when Phoenix can't get below 100 degrees, Tuscon will be 80. All thanks to the green spaces and water catchment etc.
The work of activists who battled for change in the 70s is still saving lives.
(and now the area is in the sights of some evil bastards who want to build a 3,000-acre data center that would span almost the entire width of the county, and use as much water as the whole city. Where they think that'll be coming from, I got no idea)
