@dougfir@mastodon.social @ai6yr @cvvhrn On a APL cargo ship, my dad had a boiler viewing port detonate (it was borosilicate glass under many 1000's Bar) and it absolutely shredded his eye right through his safety glasses. He had to be immediately taken to port from the cargo ship he was on and operated on. They were near the middle east coast of Japan, so there were plenty of cities to drop by. This was late 80's Japan, so most of the specialist surgeons were in Tokyo or Yokohama. He immediately went under surgery, and they got most of the glass out, but some remained. It took 30 years for the rest of the glass shards to shake free of the inner wall of his eye, and they were removed when he got cornea surgery just a couple years ago. Needless to say, with all the stuff blowing up in my face from my sketchy experiments, I never skip wearing goggles or a full gas mask. Even my own corrective lenses are ANSI rated, just for a bit of extra protection.

@onedawnconstant@climatejustice.social @dougfir@mastodon.social @cvvhrn@sfba.social Wow! Glass shards in your eye for 30 years sounds unpleasant.
