@jrf_nl@phpc.social Okay I have heard of it, and seen it everywhere...but dear tech people, could you please explain what "PHP" means? Like write it out as entire words? (^_^)* Most people don't understand the tech-talk so trying to figure out how it effects us gets really hard. And how to fix it gets even harder since it is more big word, or abbreviations that make no sense. Simple words for simple people. (Also before anyone may think me stupid - yes, but also this technically my third language)

@hiisikoloart@writing.exchange @jrf_nl@phpc.social PHP is a programming language. In the beginning websites were just static pages; very boring. Then people managed to make webpages that could do a few things, via complicated bits of code called Perl scripts. Then finally someone invented PHP. A language that was easy to get started with and quickly enabled people to create interactive websites. It grew quickly in popularity and due to it being the thing Wordpress is written in, it is used on a huge number of websites around the world. There are more modern and more secure ways to build websites today, but still an enormous amount of PHP is still running on websites around the world.

@hiisikoloart@writing.exchange @jrf_nl@phpc.social For all intents an purposes, PHP is just a name, not an acronym. It started out as an acronym for "Personal Home Page", but has long since become much bigger than that, so they changed it to officially mean "PHP Hypertext Preprocessor", but even to tech people, PHP is just a name.

@hiisikoloart@writing.exchange @jrf_nl@phpc.social Okay take all the technical stuff and put it in a box, we don't need it for this. You want to host a website. If the content never changes, you can just host plain files. This is the best way of doing it. Things get a lot more complicated if the content ever needs to change. You want comments? Someone's name in the corner? The ability to accept user input? You need a tool that actually do things like math reading from files on your sever. PHP is one common and fairly well establishrd tool. The way PHP works, the browser does not know the difference, but the website will.
