Then people managed to make webpages that could do a few things, via complicated bits of code called Perl scripts. Then finally someone invented PHP. A language that was easy to get started with and quickly enabled people to create interactive websites. It grew quickly in popularity and due to it being the thing Wordpress is written in, it is used on a huge number of websites around the world. There are more modern and more secure ways to build websites today, but still an enormous amount of PHP is still running on websites around the world.
