@ehashman@cloudisland.nz I need to figure out the steps to import/compare with what I have in Apple passwords. And what stuff doesn’t import. Starting points for me/others. How much of https://1password.com/compare/apple-passwords-vs-1password is still true, or applies to me. https://9to5mac.com/2026/02/25/heres-how-to-switch-from-1password-to-apple-passwords/ seems simple: Export your passwords from 1Password Open and unlock the 1Password app on your Mac From the menubar, File > Export and select the account you want to export Enter your account password When asked to choose a format, choose CSV and select Export Data Choose where you want to export your 1Password data and select open Import your passwords into Apple Passwords Open the Passwords app and authenticate From the menubar, File > Import passwords from file Select the CSV file Securely delete the CSV file

@ehashman@cloudisland.nz If you pay a subscription fee for your password manager, do you really have a password manager? Or are you really paying someone else to hold your passwords, and please don't misuse them?

@ehashman@cloudisland.nz I spent my afternoon starting in on containerizing https://codeberg.org/ChiPass/ChiPass as part of the process to terminate an 18 year relationship with @1password@1password.social

@ehashman@cloudisland.nz AI, Electron, violations of macOS UI conventions, and now hanging out with Nazis. Interesting that the rank and file don’t seem to be happy about this; I wonder whether any will walk. Anyway, time to look elsewhere.

@ehashman@cloudisland.nz if anyone needs a new password manager.... Just use keepass with WebDAV. Why put your hand on a new stove by going to 'another online service'?

@ehashman@cloudisland.nz I actually stopped giving them money a while ago. I'm still using the last version that could be purchased (v7?), and never moved to a subscription. Of course, that's getting a little annoying now. I guess the obvious solution is to move to bitwarden? Or use whatever's built in to my browser or MacOS?

@ehashman@cloudisland.nz It took us a year to get my mother to learn how to use 1password. I'm not going through that again. So this is going to have to wait. Sure, it's bad, but it's just one of a long list of bad, and it's nowhere close to the top.

@ehashman@cloudisland.nz @Viss@mastodon.social I left 1Password in the dust over a year ago, for a variety of reasons that predated any of this drama. It was a pain, because there was no good export/import path, and because there was a lot of really old junk from ten years of use in the database, but an hour or two a day in the evening for a week got it all sorted. I’m glad I went to the effort.

@ehashman@cloudisland.nz You also don’t lose access when your subscription runs out. Your vaults just become read-only, so can keep them around as you continue to migrate.

Bleh. Looks like I have until the end of November to migrate (although you can still access your data when a subscription expires, just not edit it)

@ehashman@cloudisland.nz I can't cancel because my account is paid for by my employer, but I DID send them a screenshot of my Bitwarden invoice
