Today has been a busy day, and not just work-wise. Some random thoughts:

  • FreeBSD jails and ZFS have saved a client once again. Because things happen, and when they do, it's good to be prepared.
  • Mixing different PHP versions on a Debian or Ubuntu host is never easy, especially in the long run. It works, but sooner or later something will go wrong. Better to isolate them in containers, and when I do that, I prefer FreeBSD and jails.
  • OpenBSD keeps evolving on its own terms. And that's reassuring.
  • NetBSD quietly keeps going its own way, just as it has for many years. And so do my NetBSD servers. Maybe it's time to run some performance comparisons and write about them on my blog.

I'm still passionate about technology. The same technology that gets me out of bed every morning and makes me want to sit down at my computer.

And I hope I can keep doing this for many years to come.

Thank you, technology. The good kind. The kind that still inspires me and makes me smile.

This #ThankYouTuesday, I want to send a huge, public Thank You to @h3artbl33d@exquisite.social ! Like so many truly wonderful human beings, @h3artbl33d@exquisite.social does incredible things for the Fediverse, the BSD ecosystem, internet security, and... the entire world. Exquisite is a shining example of security, thoughtful moderation, and genuine commitment. Exactly what a Fediverse community should be. The world is a much, much better place thanks to people like them. And we should be proud to have such wonderful human beings here, with us.

There is a person I've been helping for a while who runs two instances, one #GoToSocial and one #snac. Yesterday, they suffered severe file system corruption on their device, and I lent them a hand with the recovery. For GoToSocial, they restored the DB from the previous backup and got it running again. For snac, although a few files were lost, no action was necessary... it just started back up and did what it had to do, bringing the instance back to full operation. This goes to show that when software is well-designed and intentionally kept simple, it's also easier to get back up and running when something goes wrong. In this case, snac's "files-only" approach demonstrated excellent resilience. Thanks, @grunfink ! #snac2 #snac #ThankYouTuesday #Efficiency #IT #SysAdmin #OwnYourData

Recently, I've noticed that many people who publicly share their first impressions of FreeBSD consistently highlight two things: the documentation and the community. So, thank you to everyone who helps make this community a better place, and in particular to those who devote their time and effort to improving the project's documentation. #ThankYouTuesday
