on my way to concert venue yesterday i was briefly behind a company van that explained its business as ‘materials handling’ and i thought that could be applied very widely. i’m gonna use it for my music preparation work.
i also was passed by a white van that had only this text: “for a free quote call” and then a mobile telephone number. i was tempted to call and ask for something from shakespeare.

The phrase 'Christian mythology' just came to mind. Might be provocatively useful, i dunno.

I was wondering what percentage of my #ThreeGoodThings are of the ‘cessation of hostilities’ type.
It is (in my firm view) that a bad thing stopping is a lesser class of good thing. Still good, and good to mark, but what I want, what we all want, is good things which are in themselves positive. A kindness from someone, a lucky find, a good meal with friends.
Quite a few of mine are ‘this thing I had to do is over’, or ‘I have finished this chore’ or ‘I grasped a nettle and did a thing I need to do that was I was procrastinating’. All of these •are• good things, definitely. But I’d like to have more of those positive good things.

Too much sport on the telly. Wall to wall ball.
Instead of concentrating all the sport in a few weeks, maybe we could spread them out through the year, so the density of sport will reach equilibrium, and no one need get excited about it because it’s always going on a bit in the background.
104 football world cup games of roughly 100 minutes each = 10,400 minutes per year, or about 70 seconds of football per hour. I could put up with that amount.

I am a good speller. Never had to work hard at it, my way of learning and remembering words seems to include their spellings right from the start.
But for a very few words, I have a problem.
Like the word achieve. I have to write it out and inspect it visually before I know how to spell it. Acheive nope achieve yep. My brain refuses to remember that it’s ie. Frustrating.
I used to have a similar problem with guard (gaurd nope guard yep) until I moved to the UK and started reading the Guardian. Daily exposure seemed to cure that one.
If I could visualise these words in my mind’s eye, this wouldn’t be a problem at all. But my mind’s eye is blind.

I think I regularly operate on less sleep than I should get. Not insomnia, just low-quality sleep of not enough duration.
Part of the problem is an attitude to sleep that I inherited from my parents (sigh). It was some sort of moral failing to nap or to lie abed past the normal hour of rising.
Some hidden part of me still holds on to this frankly ridiculous attitude. I fight against falling asleep when I clearly need it, and when I wake in the early morning I don’t easily allow myself to fall back to sleep.
Another thing I’ve noticed: on waking, I run a system check to see how I feel; if I’ve awoken gently, at the right point of a sleep cycle, I feel good and think I’ve got enough sleep. But that is the wrong conclusion: the check tells me nothing about the amount of sleep I’ve had, only that I’ve awoken without interrupting the sleep cycle. It takes me an hour or so to know whether I’ve slept well enough.
