Breaking Up with Google Play: Why Conversations Is Now Free

Conversations, my federated instant messaging client for Android, started out as many traditional open-source projects do: as an attempt to scratch my own itch. Development started in January 2014 in my student dormitory, and within weeks I started dogfooding and using the client as the primary means of communicating with my friends. However, when it came to releasing the app to the public on March 24, 2014—exactly twelve and a half years ago today—it was immediately clear to me that I would at

#Quicksy registrations are permanently closed. The project was viable for a long time only because it required minimal effort. However, fighting industrial-scale SMS pumping fraud has become unsustainable, both financially and in terms of workload. The XMPP server will remain online for the foreseeable future, but users are advised to switch their client to #Conversations_im.

RE: https://gultsch.social/@daniel/116578297080678405 It took Google 9 days to review this release. These insane review times seem to be the new normal. Anyway it’s finally live on Google Play. Enjoy the new search bar and the improved attachment flow. #XMPP #Jabber #Conversations_im

2.20.0 has been tagged with some significant UI work.

• The main screen now features prominent access to search and can suggest contacts to you for quick navigation
• The media attachment flow has been reworked and is now closer to the input field.
• The tablet layout has been improved and the title bar is now split into two.
