#cow #cde #wayland I've been making steady improvements to cowbuttons and have come up with a fairly accurate approximation of CDE's panel. See screenshot attached. What is CoW? It's a window manager for wayland using River as the compositor. https://codeberg.org/cow-wm/cow

FreeBSD 15 + CDE is probably the closest you can get to sitting in front of a high-end UNIX workstation without owning a time machine. Running Common Desktop Environment in 2026 feels strangely refreshing. No blur effects, no Electron, no notifications fighting for attention, No ai written code, just Motif, terminals, man pages, and a desktop paradigm that was already mature before I was born. Current setup: • FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE • CDE • dtwm • bhyve • Motif everywhere Today’s activity: reading bhyve(4) manuals and pretending I'm a UNIX admin in 1996. #FreeBSD #BSD #CDE #Unix #Motif #bhyve #OpenSource #UnixPorn #RetroComputing #FOSS

The recently released #CDE 2.5.3 runs on #XLibre. That may bring back some memories of good times, tears shed, or other sentiments… Yes, we are almost at the end of 2025, and CDE is still working. More #LiberatedScreens at https://github.com/orgs/X11Libre/discussions/211
