Happy #PortfolioDay ! My name is Corey Johnston, and I’m an artist living in Eureka, CA. Above the arch of this red brick Wiesbaden villa, an allegorical female figure looks out from the plasterwork: flowers in her hair, two winged sphinxes spread wide on either side, a circular leaded glass window framed by rosette medallions below. The honey-toned wooden door under all of that almost plays second fiddle. Wiesbaden's residential streets are a survey of Jugendstil at its most theatrical. This red brick building has one of the most arresting door surrounds I've encountered: an allegorical female figure looks out from the plasterwork at the crown of the arch, flowers woven into her hair, flanked by two winged sphinxes with their wings spread wide. Below her, a circular leaded glass window sits framed by rosette medallions. The warm honey-toned wooden door underneath barely gets a look. Palacete Faciola, antiga residência da família de Antônio D'Almeida Faciola. Natural de São Luís do Maranhão, foi intendente municipal (que hoje equivale a prefeito) da capital do Pará, nos anos 30. Com o passar dos anos, o edifício sofreu algumas mudanças em sua fachada! Apesar da arquitetura predominantemente eclética, o palacete possui fortes traços do estilo Art Nouveau.

  • EN / Palacete Faciola, former residence of Antônio D'Almeida Faciola's family. Born in São Luís do Maranhão, he was mayor of Belém, capital of Pará (Brasil) in the 1930s. The building had some changes in its facade over the years! Despite the predominantly eclectic architecture, the palace has strong features of the Art Nouveau style.
