@sean_ae@post.lurk.org @Cognessence@social.linux.pizza @silvermoats@mastodon.social i'm a fiend for incomprehensible/funny audiophile jargon myself. i think i just like things with a lot of nonsense words, like the "super legato linear" and "gibraltar chassis" on my current amp. i seem to remember the loudness button had an actual purpose though, but i'd need to look it up again. aiwa had incredible tech back then, like they made a couple of headphones (hp-t10 and x10) that had adjustable mechanical switches to adjust tuning for more bass.

@Cognessence@social.linux.pizza @elifyalvac@tldr.nettime.org monkey island 2 is such a timeless favorite to me. those caribbean islands are absolutely in my top 3 places from video games i'd like to live in. i still need to finish return to monkey island which deals with very heady themes in a very meta way that i enjoy (much like the ending to mi2 actually). i have yet to finish grim fandango, i have the remake but the puzzles do my head in a bit, maybe i should try to dive into it again.

@Cognessence@social.linux.pizza a similar but related concept that i love to use a lot is juxtaposition of two very different energies summed together. stacking against each other very smooth synths and very harsh drums is one of the most obvious and easy ones (a good example is arovane's fard ent:r), but anything that provides contrast and an interplay of energies really tends to make my ears perk up. the tension between the two or more elements is what makes the sum more interesting.

@Cognessence@social.linux.pizza relistening to HABITATIONS right this moment and Geometry of birds just finished as i'm typing this. boc year or no boc year i don't see any dimension where this isn't in my top albums of 2026. absolutely gorgeous album just as my initial listen indicated.

@Cognessence@social.linux.pizza oh also, tangentially related to what you were mentioning about rubbery sounds, if you like those and you've somehow never heard them i highly recommend the errorsmith releases he put out on his own label, the two self-titled ones (the white label and the one with the yellow boot) as well as the near disco dawn comp. absolute treasure trove of "sound design that sounds like rubber"

@Cognessence@social.linux.pizza ur welcome man! yeah sometimes it's good to go back and rethink. i've got an unfinished track on the backburner at the moment and it's the intro that just doesn't work, it sounds too uninteresting. the rest of the whole thing is there i just gotta crack that. and yeah i don't get synaesthesia as much (at least not the "this sound is blue" kind), but music that my brain finds evocative immediately conjures images of places and things and animals etc. very potent

@Cognessence@social.linux.pizza that pairing up of disparate sources is something i've been meaning to incorporate more in my recent stuff, had not really put it into conscious thought as such, but it's very illuminating. i think the whole ai thing made me want to inject more organic-ness into what i create. love that ravel anecdote, guy was basically doing sound design. i often wonder what composers of that era/earlier would've made with computers. probably not anything suited to the tastes of classical listeners

@Cognessence for sure! i feel like i'm only starting to grapple at the complexities of the album tbh. I think i also finally figured out why i love Nature reverses so much, it's because it reminds me of both crosspolar and percival pembroke, two artists whom i dearly love. i think you'd get a kick out of percy's concurrent 386 if you haven't heard it. highly recc getting more into disasterpeace too. his soundtracks for hyperlight drifter, it follows and paradise marsh are absolutely excellent.

@Cognessence man i can tell! this is such a detailed album. I'm so glad i gave it another deep listen because there's so much to unpack. i love melodic complexity in music and this gives it in spades. and i completely forgot the diversions into more beat-oriented abstraction as well. multiple points on the album reminded me of Disasterpeace whose compositions i also really love. you deserve to be scoring a big movie and get a golden globe, much like kangding ray with sirat!

@Cognessence@social.linux.pizza yeah what an incredible album honestly. i think i already said that but Nature reverses is such an absolutely perfect closer too. absolutely great record all around. love everything. the composition, the sound design, the variety. such a beautiful piece of work. so glad i own the cd for it, it'll have a very proud place in the collection.
