Bluesky is all kind of down today, and I gotta be honest, it makes me very pleased that regardless of the source of all these issues regular people immediately associate a bad IT product with vibe coding and AI.

That's the stigma that should always be attached to anything and anyone associated with those "tools".

I wanna sub-post and push back against this so much.

No law or policy is truly enforceable. The MIT license isn't truly enforceable. What you do is you codify your morals and then enforce that to the best of your ability. Mistakes will happen, you'll fix, improve, apologize.

In practice, this might be true, none of it might be better because of a "moral policy" — when you only view the end result.

But it sends the message. It reveals the intent. It puts your heart on your sleeve.

@JigenD@mastodon.social Why? And why does it matter what you think is qualified to be the end result of someone else’s creative process? Open the article, if you will, there are screenshots from other games, including the new RE. Even if you are somehow an authority on what constitutes finished art, I’m sure that example will be sufficient. But like… What the fuck is wrong with you? Hell!..

https://www.blender.org/news/upcoming-blender-development-fund-and-ai-policies/

I guess that makes some people happy.

I still think the outrage is ridiculous. Nvidia, a military-industrial complex giant, has been a sponsor since forever. AI-loving Meta; Grok's No.1 fan Timmy are sponsors as well. There is damn Meshy even, literally encroaching on artists...

Anthropic is shit, but is it more shit than those companies? Many reacted like something unprecedented has happened, but that's not really the case.

The dilemma of recreation. After a few days of not touching any of my work I feel the urge to start doing things again. A part of me wants to capitalize on this boost of motivation, while another feels like I’m cheating myself out of the rest.

Ugh, I miss being younger when the energy was infinite.

@ariarhythmic@ohai.social I know you saw at least one of my posts before. You know my feelings about AI. I think it's important that Blender doesn't collude with AI companies on features, that it doesn't develop its own genAI tools, no chatbots, no nothing. But FOSS projects cannot really reject big lumps of money. There is very little choice, because sustaining FOSS is incredibly hard. We should not be chastising Blender in these moments, we should be supporting it.

Oh, apparently Friday was the Stop Cyberbullying Day.

I don't have a platitude to bestow upon y'all, but please remember that people harassing and heckling you online are the miserable ones. Pity them and their envy, their vile hearts. You have something they don't: you are loved and cherished.

Feeling like blocking on sight people who refuse to understand that FOSS projects cannot exist without people being paid for their work, and your 5 bucks a month is, unfortunately, not enough to sustain something, let alone provide people with stability to plan for future.

Someone should make an asset pack with custom node icons for Godot, fitting the style and using official colors for 2D, 3D, Controls, etc. 🤔

I like customizing things, but making custom icons every time is yet another sinkhole where time spent is not really paying off IMO.

On the subject of The Discourse, it does seem like a very minor change to wording around the same principles as before. I don't think that any of the already merged PRs would've been rejected under these changes either, which makes the whole thing moot.

Would love to see that introspection though.

Looking at the past can be funny sometimes. You are here now, doing the things you do, because of everything that has happened to you. That includes all the terrible things too.

Sometimes... these bad things almost want you to give them credit for all that you've become, your successes. It irks me to think that inadvertently I was put on this path by my worst experiences. That without them I wouldn't have experienced the good that came after, crossed paths with people that uplift me today.

@DKesserich@mastodon.gamedev.place They’ve been disappointing for a long time, yeah. And I can’t really tell if this is them cowardly making sure Nvidia doesn’t blacklist them (like they do with honest reviewers), or if they are genuinely completely apathetic to the art form rendering tech is supposed to be made for. Either way, games are like empty benchmarks for them. Not something to be appreciated.

RE: https://mastodon.gamedev.place/@yurisizov/116539966688586574

To compensate I devised a new plan for this week: spend each day a few hours on personal projects, then a few hours of contract work.

And I think that experiment is a success! I made progress on art and code for my game, and also made some money – all without guilt in either direction! And I felt more productive too, working more hours total.

Switching up midday also helped it all feel less draining. Even though I like to keep focus, sometimes things drag you down if you don’t take a break.

Gamedev Mastodon

Yuri :godot: (@yurisizov@mastodon.gamedev.place)

This was supposed to be a push week. Instead, on Monday I was in low energy mode, on Tuesday I was setting up a new editor (and figuring out how to fix a plugin for it), on Wednesday I worked okay, on Thursday I felt an urgent need for a long walk and then did taxes, and on Friday, today, I worked a bit, then felt low energy again. 😐😐😐

Just realized that we get power cutoffs often enough that I maybe should buy an UPS for my laptop now. Which is just silly...

With an external keyboard (because S on the built-in is permanently shorted) and a spiderweb of dongle wires (because all built-in USB ports bar one are dead) I get no convenience of a laptop and with the form factor I get no performance of a comparable desktop.

The worst of both worlds!

No more physical games media in 1.5 years, eh?

15 years ago I was ordering physical disks for my 360 by mail from game.co.uk (I was not in the UK) just so I could have an international version of the games I wanted. Literally impossible in the digital age.

Why does the copyright on Google Maps say that imagery is from 2026 when it's not even from this decade sometimes? Does it mean that Maxar provides them old pictures anew, so the copyright year is just the last data fetch?

@bryce@mastodon.brycedixon.dev @memoriesin8bit@mastodon.gamedev.place @tracefree@mastodon.gamedev.place Oh, I don't mean that you cannot render images on the fly. In fact, you don't even need nodes for that. But you don't have to do that for this task here. You can create a scripted texture type, extending Texture2D, and render other textures, styleboxes, text from there. And RTL supports any texture resource as an image, including your scripted ones. Of course pre-rendering would be cheaper per frame, but if that works here, then no reason to do it at runtime.

No gamedev this week because I needed to reach a milestone in contract work and then I need to clear my head.

Neating up organization of assets for GDQuest's Learn 2D and Learn 3D courses has been a pleasant task though. I like neating things up. I'd be a good librarian.

Serves them all right.

@memoriesin8bit@mastodon.gamedev.place Well, depends on how much you need to customize the looks. You should probably look into RichTextLabel regardless, though. For specialized text styling you can create custom BBCode tags a.k.a. effects. And with good ole string interpolation you can even insert images.

@bryce@mastodon.brycedixon.dev @memoriesin8bit@mastodon.gamedev.place @tracefree@mastodon.gamedev.place As an extra bit: texture resources don't even need to exist on disk to work with RTL. You can give them any resource path, even a completely made-up one, and that will still work as long as the resource is loaded in memory. In GDQuest I used this in the GDTour framework to make copies of all editor icons at runtime, assign them fake paths, and then put them in RTLs used to render tour contents for the user. This should also be helpful for the task at hand.

@bryce@mastodon.brycedixon.dev @memoriesin8bit@mastodon.gamedev.place @tracefree@mastodon.gamedev.place Basically, nodes and resources do not do any rendering. They are just lists of commands for the rendering server to draw something. Resources don't even hold any rendering context, they use the canvas item RID passed to them. Given that information, consider this: you can create a custom resource that contains all the rendering commands you need, whatever they are. I have a custom texture type that draws styleboxes, for quick prototyping, for example.

@ariarhythmic@ohai.social I am saying that people started to spell doom for the project like AI companies sponsoring Blender hasn't already been the case for a long time. It was a misplaced anger over project receiving much needed funding with no strings attached. I think it's much different from integrating "AI" into a project. I think many people don't understand how unstable funding is in FOSS. I think many throw "better it not existed at all if it can't exist without AI money" too easily.

@ariarhythmic@ohai.social So we're getting rid of Nvidia, Epic, Meta, and the rest, right? Because, alas, half the corporate sponsors now are AI companies, and the other half are probably peddling or using it. We are not living in a world without AI money being injected into every facet of tech industry anymore. That's a ridiculous line to draw when we talk about corporate sponsorships (and we should have corporate sponsorships, they should pay for FOSS). Blender was not about to integrate "AI".

On every platform they sell this as the future of in-game lighting, they talk about how this doesn’t artificially change anything in game, and that it somehow restores the original creative intent that gamedevs were unable to implement themselves. But thanks for letting me know that this doesn’t pass your threshold for shilling.
