I think one way is to make people realize that there is a concept in copyright called Threshold of Originality, meaning that because machine generated output in itself is not creative work, it’s not copyrightable. You can do literally anything with it, the licenses attached don’t matter. The GPL is not enforceable and no proprietary EULA is enforceable.

If you really think that FreeBSD whose developers often use Macs on desktop is any different, think again. Maybe OpenBSD but certainly not FreeBSD.

True and people without any shouldn't attempt April Fool jokes

Oh good, now you can watch ads on your giant tv when your console or PC game ends because the TV will know.

You connect TVs to WiFi?

Moving from a shitty proprietary web renderer to participate in Chromium development was an improvement.

People who still use WinRAR kinda deserve that. Seriously. WinRAR in 2026? Like WTF.

Doing so reduced the amount of diversity in rendering engines

It killed the last proprietary engine. It made the web more free.

That’s a loss for the Web as a whole.

You're wrong.

I hope the runtime downloads of dictionaries will also extend to UI translations. SteamOS doesn't ship anything but English, probably because of Steam Deck 64GB

I mean the choice between only two browser engines isn’t what I would call “free” though, especially since Firefox is also pulling more and more bullshit.

Gecko and Chromium are both fully free software. Old Edge isn't.

He made a good overall point.

No. It was a very weak defense of proprietary software.

Just saying he is wrong doesn’t actually make him wrong.

Just saying that doesn't make it wrong but the "argument" is wrong.

Less diversity isn’t good

Less proprietary crap is good. Free software is always preferable to fake diversity through proprietary Microsoft products.

What about WebKit? That makes 3 browser engines although it’s primarily used on Apple devices.

WebKit-GTK is fine, Ladybird and Servo also exist.

The vehement defense of a shitty, proprietary Microsoft browser here is astonishing.

People in the rest of the world cannot take you seriously when you whine about costs per gallon and the rest has to pay the same amount per liter.

The US is structured so you need a car unless you’re one of a lucky few in an urban area not built for cars. People in other countries are also reliant on cars. Even if public transport is available, it’s often overpriced and unreliable. The problem isn’t the raw cost of gas, it’s the relative increase in cost which raises the cost of living in step because you cannot live here without a car. The same is true in the rest of the world and there the cost is much higher.

Hah! It’s roughly 50-50 but even the 50% that doesn’t mind honey would usually buy some sort of syrup. It’s usually about it being an Ingredient. Some otherwise vegan sweets are coated in super thin bee’s wax, so they don’t stick together. Many don’t mind, especially if the alternative is wrapping them in plastic.

slopifying his codebase. He didn’t. That’s the point. The slop code is a self contained dependency only used for the Linux build and not part of the actual paint.net codebase. His core user group (on Windows) will never get in touch with it. I think everybody, including him, would prefer if there was a working implementation of Direct2D for Wine.

I think the point is that the developers doesn’t want to actually review the code which they can do with a self contained dependency which they then ship on a “take it or leave it” basis. I kind of get it and I think it’s a more responsible approach than to vibe code the core engine of their application.
