Writing is thinking, its NOT a vehicle for thought but a condition of possibility. When we write we externalize cognition into a relational space where meaning is co-constructed through reading and response.
In schools and universities, writing is a psychological contract between teacher and student. When done by oneself, one enters a radical pedagogy of uncertainty. (Adapted from Gardner-McTaggart, A., Blyth, C. https://doi.org/10.1007/s00146-025-02807-8)

Same ed techie package (open, critical, pragmatic), but perhaps a bit more intentional. Small, at this moment, is all. Lives in #SouthAfrica. Can be found elsewhere as @weblearning@social.ds106.us. All opinions are my own.
Been teaching myself to make a clickable Wikipedia map and have created a set of instructions to help you become familiar with the various mapping templates. There are six examples and then a challenge. See pic below. Instructions are here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Derek_J_Moore/Maps/
@carpetbomberz@mastodon.online Been meaning to say thanks so much for the encouragement. It is most appreciated. Here are a few more maps if you are interested https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Derek_J_Moore/Maps/Multi_label
Joint celebration yesterday. Wikimedia and its 14th Birthday and international mother tongue day. https://wikitongues.org
If you do find yourself running a multi user site, like https://foliofriday.africa/, then check out this training event. https://events.reclaimhosting.com/event/admin-workshop-wordpress-multisite-wpms/
@cogdog@cosocial.ca Huge it is! Today I discovered this neat mapping tool. Works well with categories as well. https://osm4wiki.toolforge.org/cgi-bin/wiki/wiki-osm.pl?project=en&article=Parktown_mansions
If you do contribute to Wikipedia, you might be able to join their library. Then put this memorable URL before the address and voila! https://wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/login?auth=production&url=
A belated happy birthday to Wikipedia. And what a gift to the Wikimedia foundation from Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, Perplexity, and Mistral AI Hats off to you guys. Am hoping the foundation will now be able to pay those who contribute for their labour. Especially those vernacular language contributors from the majority world. Their language and cultures are vanishing, they need your support. https://arstechnica.com/ai/2026/01/wikipedia-will-share-content-with-ai-firms-in-new-licensing-deals/
@cogdog@cosocial.ca Hello Alan. Been meaning to say “Howzit “ for ages. Happy new year to you. The @cogdog@social.ds106.us treatment is always welcome, thanks for adding these to the board. The advertising cruft is also a real pain. I’ve also been holding out against it for 30 years, but have not really found an alternate (and sustainable) revenue source. Grr!
Wishing you all the best for the next years. From a lucky bloke in a warm and long South African evening.
A friend who has been doing lovely stuff on Wikipedia has been blocked and he is gutted. He was showing others how Wikipedia worked and let others use his phone. That's when the problems started. Stays in rural free state (-27.6524969,28.1262264). If you have any advice...it would be appreciated. If you know a Wikimedia administrator, could you please chat?
So I find it just quite astonishing how much my mind filters out stuff. I’m looking at OEGlobal at the moment and seeing Al’s posts about Wikidata an museums? https://connect.oeglobal.org/t/explore-a-map-of-museums-listed-in-wikidata/6754 Now I swear I’d never seen these before. But I must have subconsciously noticed them. Cause I’ve been collecting these kinda SPARQL queries.
@HelenLockhart@mastodon.scot ah, sorry Helen. Asked my dad. He’s the fundi in the family. He could not help!
Gautrain API reverse engineering? Darn, this looked like such a nice piece of work from Carl. https://sandrock.co.za/carl/2018/09/gautrain-api-reverse-engineering/ But it looks like the OPEN peeps exploring mobility and location data (originally from SA) are no longer around.
Can't find https://developer.whereismytransport.com/documentation.
@mensrea@freeradical.zone @davidnjoku@mastodon.world The best way to compare is to locate the Wikidata number of a Wikipedia article. Then you can view all the different translations. My experience (here in SA) is that each language community has its own perspective on an event.
