It’s funny how recovery feels so different based on context. In Thailand, I felt VERY far along in my recovery. That I could pretty much do all of the things I needed to do. But here I am, two weeks further recovered, and everything seems so much harder now that I’m back home. I’m getting there, but it just takes so much longer than I would like.

Gender is such a strange thing. On the one hand, I’m completely a binary woman. It’s where I feel at home. But on the other? What the fuck is a binary woman? Am I a binary woman because I like dressing femme and arranging flowers and chatting for hours with other women? Am I a binary woman because I like women’s sports? Does it make me non-binary because I don’t want to have a traditional heteronormative relationship with a man? Or stay quiet and submissive and perform my gender role? I don’t claim to be non-binary. The label doesn’t fit. I don’t want to take a little gender from here and a little gender from there. I want it all from the girl side. But also, what even is ON the girl side to take? So it’s kind of a contradiction. I want the world to see me as a woman, because I am, but what the hell does that even mean?

@faithisleaping@anarres.family More than anything I learned in my coursework, this has been the important thing I have learned this year. If I fight my brain, I will lose. I will end up getting less done than if I had just gone with it. So while I very much set reminders and milestones to hit, I realise that the way I get there (or even when I get there) is going to meander and take a bit more time than it would for other people. And then I will get up against the deadline and pull off a ridiculous amount of work in a very small period of time. 😂

Me from three years ago would have thought that me from today was full of shit when I told her that: She would be working a patron-facing job in a libraryShe would LOVE the social interactionShe would always be gendered correctly by everyone At the time, I thought I was basically introverted (I was, because masking took a lot of cognitive energy). I thought that computer touching was the best career because I didn't have to interact with people very often. And I thought there was no way that I could ever look like the woman I knew I was inside. Turns out that I was actually a slight extrovert when the masking came off, and have more energy after a day of interacting with coworkers and patrons than I do in the morning. And it turns out that I actually didn't particularly like my software jobs over the years, and craved a care-based job helping actual people. And between estrogen, hair, makeup, and confidence, being gendered correctly ended up being a non-issue eventually. Transition is wild. And honestly? I would have been shaking my damn head at myself if I had told me from two years ago, and even me from one year ago these things. The first two years were just figuring out this whole transition thing, and the last year has been learning about who I am and what I want out of life. I'm looking forward to the next year, where maybe I start living out those desires and dreams, finally. For the first time.

@dee@social.treehouse.systems yeah, going off the hormones sucks and really isn’t supported by evidence. I didn’t have a big depression, but I noticed my laughter came back after I started them again. It really does make a big difference. Best of luck on the surgery and I will ping you to see how you are recovering. Having just been through it, I hope you won’t feel alone afterwards. 💜

You know how you spend your whole life hating yourself so you don’t set proper boundaries because you don’t matter anyway? And then you start to love yourself and decide that you deserve boundaries after all? I have a LOT of cleanup still to do from that first era of my life, and one of those poorly defined boundaries just blew up in my face. 😡

For example, their favourite: “sex assigned at birth” This tells them exactly nothing about me. It doesn’t tell them my hormone profile. It doesn’t tell them the shape of my genitalia or whether I have a uterus or cervix. It doesn’t tell them whether I am at increased risk of breast or prostate cancer. It doesn’t tell them about my heart disease and/or stroke risk. It doesn’t even tell them what my chromosome configuration is. It’s useless information. They know the risks they are screening for, they should ask about those risks specifically.

So I alluded to this a few months back, but I just received word this morning that I have received PhD funding for the next four years! I never imagined that this would be the direction my life would take when I first came to Ireland to study, but I’m really excited about the opportunity!

@Serena@lgbtqia.space @faithisleaping@anarres.family A big problem with LLMs as they are currently trained is that they are just absorbing the current state of human civilisation and uncritically using it as the body of knowledge. In effect, we are freezing in place early 21st century cisheteronormative, white supremacist patriarchy and then making people dumber by relying on LLMs so that society will never evolve and grow. But the research shows that LLMs absolutely replicate racial and gender stereotypes, and have a binary concept of gender that would make TERFs very happy. Oh yeah, and it's also accelerating the collapse of human civilisation in its entirety, so there's that too.

@sashag@anarres.family This makes sense to me. One of the reasons I'm starting to love librarianship is that it's a caring profession. It's not about someone's bottom line, it's about taking care of people.
