We made an official complaint to Föli, but have not yet heard anything back. We
have not seen that particular driver on our bus route since these events, but
we do not know if anything has been done about the occurance.
This driver's behavior was in our opinion unacceptable. We need to demand
better of Föli, its employees, and municipal services in general.

Getting into Finnish politics: pick a party, show up to things, and make sure the person responsible for candidate selection knows your name.
Getting into American politics: someone in your family has connections from their campaigns, right? Or one of their friends does at least?
Age verification is stupid, unnecessary, and dangerous, and more people should question the _goals_ of this push, rather than just the technical implementation.
That said, I also can't ignore that the EU is building a new ID system that bouncers can demand, whereas the US is trying to force a verification requirement into _operating systems_.
These are not the same.

The other passengers also did not help us. Mnay of them (and the only ones who
spoke up) took the driver's side, and accused us of misusing the wheelchair.
In the end I told the driver that we intended to ride regardless of their
opinion. Their response was that they would let it slide this time, but that
the next driver might not. We eventually got home, but were shocked at what had
happened.

Here I would draw the reader's attention to the fact that the driver did not at
any point try to speak directly to my wheelchair-using partner, but rather only
to me, their escort.
This is an unacceptably common experience for wheelchair users, where they are
denied the right to participate in society as equal adults, as if mobility
issues meant that they were no longer independent persons.

Here it would be good to mention that we live in Turku. If not otherwise
mentioned, in this thread _bus_ or other words referring to public transit
refer to a vehicle or service belonging to the Turku area transit authority
Föli.
On Föli buses, a wheelchair user and the person accompanying them get to travel

There is no requirement to show documentation of need.

It is not in itself problematic if the driver doesn't know everything. The
driver _should_ know the accessibility rules, but everyone has a first day,
people forget things, and bus driver training probably focuses more on driving
skill and less on getting to know all of the company's rules. If that had been
it, I would have forgiven them.

My partner uses a wheelchair to get around when away from home. They are
usually able to walk very short distances (across a room, give or take), but
not anything more demanding.
This situation is very common among wheelchair users.
Among other things, when taking the bus, they usually board or leave the bus on
foot, but then get back into their wheelchair as soon as it has been moved into
the bus or onto the sidewalk.

Ei ole sinänsä ongelmallista, jos kuski ei tiedä kaikkea. Kuskien _pitäisi_
tietää esteettömyyssäännöt, mutta jokaisella on ensimmäinen työpäivä, ihmiset
unohtavat asioita, ja bussikuskien koulutus perustuu varmaan enemmän ajokykyyn
kuin sääntelyyn tutustumiseen. Jos se olisi jäänyt siihen, olisin antanut
anteeksi.

But the driver did not accept my explanation.
The driver claimed several times that since my partner had gotten onto the bus
by walking and seemed "too happy", they must not actually be disabled. The
driver repeated this even after I had told them that it was inappropriate.
In addition to this, the driver accused me of trying to teach them their own
profession when I showed them the relevant part of the Föli website.

Minun kumppanini käyttää pyörätuolia liikkuessaan kodin ulkopuolella. Hän
pystyy yleensä kävelemään tosi lyhyitä etäisyyksiä (huoneen halki, plus tai
miinus), muttei mihinkään sitä vaativampaan.
Pyörätuolin käyttäjillä tämä tilanne on hyvin yleistä.
Muun muassa bussilla liikkuessamme hän nousee yleensä bussiin tai poistuu siitä
omin voimin, mutta sitten istuutuu taas pyörätuoliin heti kun se on saatu
bussiin tai kadulle.

Kuski ei kuitenkaan hyväksynyt selitystäni.
Hän vetosi siihen, että kumppanini oli noussut bussiin kävellen ja vaikutti
"liian onnelliselta", ja ei siksi ollut oikeasti vammainen. Hän toisti tämän
myös sen jälkeen, kuin kerroin hänelle sen olevan epäasiallista.
Tämän lisäksi kuski syytti minua siitä, että yritin opettaa hänelle omaa
ammattiaan, kun näytin hänelle kyseistä osaa Fölin verkkosivuista.

Muut matkustajat eivät myöskään auttaneet meitä. Moni heistä (ja ainoat, jotka
puhuivat) ottivat kuskin puolen ja syytti meitä pyörätuolin
väärinkäyttämisestä.
Lopuksi kerroin kuskille, että aioimme matkustaa hänen mielipiteestä
huolimatta. Vastauksensa oli se, että hän antaisi sen mennä tällä kertaa,
muttei seuraava kuski välttämättä antaisi. Pääsimme lopulta kotiin, mutta
olimme kuitenkin järkyttyneitä tapahtumasta.

Two weeks ago, we were taking the bus home. We were able to board without any
unusual difficulty, and everything seemed to be going well until the driver
called us to the front of the bus. As the only walking person, I went alone.
The driver asked us to pay our fare. I explained to them that the rules allowed
a wheelchair user and escort to travel for free, and that was why we had not
paid.

Teimme asiasta kantelun Fölille, muttemme ole vielä kuulleet mitään takaisin
heiltä. Emme ole näiden tapahtumien jälkeen nähneet kyseistä kuskia meidän

Kaksi viikkoa sitten palasimme kaupungilta bussilla. Pääsimme kyytiin ilman
tavallista suurempaa vaivaa, ja kaikki näytti sujuvan hyvin, kunnes kuski pyysi
minua (eikä kumppania --- vain minua) hänen luokse.
Kuski pyysi meitä maksamaan matkastamme. Selitin hänelle, että säännöt antoivat
pyörätuolin käyttäjän ja saattajan matkustaa ilmaiseksi, ja siksi olimme
jättäneet maksun maksamatta.
