@pheeef@chaos.social fuck i wanted to go to memtestx86 but i accidentally got on the bus to Darren's Boot And Nuke

@gsuberland@chaos.social this is a *super* interesting dataset im also a bit surprised that you often encounter missing metadata in MusicBrainz, since it already often feels super overwhelmingly comprehensive to me, to the point that its often hard to search. but then Spotify contains 15x more songs (at least?). and there's a bunch of stuff not on Spotify!

@hisham_hm "How to make package managers scream" was pretty funny. I'm sure there'll be more fun talks tomorrow though

@mcc@mastodon.social wait didn't Keith Stack publish an animation made with this... Yesterday? This fucking sucks

@andrewt @PinoBatch and additionally, im pretty sure its possible to make webapps that dont require absurd amounts of memory, even if you're using JS and not WASM.

@yosh@toot.yosh.is there's an excellent example of this in the train world in Belgium. in the first half of the 20th century, when trains were still in vogue among the rich, a huge chunk of Brussels was torn down to create a train station right in the middle of the city and connect the two peripheral stations directly. this north-south connection still exists and something like half of *all trains* in the country pass over it (it's one of the busiest stretches of rail in the world!). it is also impossible to expand and thus always at maximum capacity. any mishap immediately causes cascading delays across the entire country.

@thechildofroth@mastodon.world @jmaris@eupolicy.social @kde@floss.social systemd is a program responsible for managing a variety of system tasks on Linux systems, most notably managing the running and communication of background programs (such as the program which handles sound, the program which handles wifi, the program which controls printers, etc). But it also manages things like booting, networks, user sessions, DNS, etc. Systemd is relatively new and replaced a system where many different programs were responsible for all of the individual tasks, whereas Systemd is one monolithic whole. Some people preferred having many individual programs and thus dislike systemd. Some people also dislike that systemd is so ubiquitous it is almost mandatory (some programs won't work without it). But broadly these things are not really important to "normal" users.

its pretty good though. very funky.

@joshmillard@mastodon.social i believe you! im just very very tired today and spent a bit too much time convincing myself i can still count to 7 :p

@RedFuture@todon.nl @lynnesbian@fedi.lynnesbian.space gathering with my friends after school to build a train with exactly 256 axles, as a prank

wait theres a guy who currently holds 6 of the 8 major titles in the shogi world? wild why are top class shogi players seemingly so young when top class chess players all seem to be older

oh it seems like this guy did actually become the first to sweep all the major titles in shogi but hes also kind of exceptionally young

also I guess its just not true thatworld class chess players are older

@ErgonWolf @ives @mhoye an LTO-9 tape stores 18 TB in a ~100x100x20 cartridge, so about 0.09 GB/mm^2. A microSD card can store 1TB and is 11x15x1, for a capacity of 6 GB/mm^2. Magnetic tape is extremely cost efficient and durable but for sheer storage density microSD cards are very hard to beat.

@ErgonWolf @ives @mhoye fair enough, I missed that!

@joshmillard@mastodon.social wait, isn't the right solution here n=6?
