Someone once told me I'm too sincere to be funny.
Full-time caregiver to a disabled brother and father interested mainly in Thoreau, Zhuangzi, animism, Kings of Convenience, and drinking tea.
Master's degrees in music theory and theology (nonpracticing), classically trained and folk musician (also nonpracticing), and I once organized and helped plant over 800 trees on abandoned mine land (I do still plant trees occasionally).

I wasn't gonna get anything for #bandcampfriday (gotta save up for the kiddo's birthday party this month) but I'm not sure I can pass up this new album by Susanne Sundfør based on the writing of Julian of Norwich

went to the creek after dinner and we found the biggest salamander I've seen in that area. Pretty sure it was a spring salamander, not sure what else it could be. The salamanders of Ohio guide doesn't even list it in our county (surrounding ones yes). Exciting stuff

I think I disagree with the “anyone can become disabled at any time” post. I’ve certainly used that line before, but the more time I spend caregiving/parenting/being in a body the more I think it’s more accurate to say that it’s inherent in everyone all the time to varying degrees and with varying severity—it isn’t that you are not and then become disabled, it’s that you already and always were and it fluctuates throughout your embodied life. disability is constitutive of embodiment

got my son a (used) ikea bunk bed*. he was mostly excited to use it as a fort and to play in it. Tonight is the first night we’ve been home to use it for sleeping and he of course wanted to try sleeping up there. I’ve got my pillows set up on the floor next to him unsure how this would go—we’ve been cosleeping since he was old enough to not sleep in a bassinet next to me (I was the one that got up and fed him at night). He fell asleep almost instantly up there without me and I’m not ready

fuck.
I think I’ve been avoiding admitting to myself for several years now that I really like teaching. I’ve done some through the years at varying levels, primarily undergraduate but I briefly taught music to pre k –2nd grade kids. For the last couple years every time there was an opening at the Montessori school my son attends I had this urge to apply. Just left orientation for 1st graders and I’m all weepy not just because my son is starting elementary but because I want to be a teacher

boy wanted to ride on an electric train (we’ve been on a steam and diesel train already) so we took the rapid transit in Cleveland and explored. he was underwhelmed (I explained most of public transportation is just waiting) at first but has gotten more excited about the whole thing the more stops we take

it’s neat how the sunflowers—which are only heliotropic in their immaturity—now fix their gaze earthward, the weight of their reverence even severing their umbilical tethers… they dismember themselves in joyful offerings to their avian alloparents

dad jokes are like traditional folk music: an oral tradition without source or author, emerging from a particular culture yet evolving over time. no one can claim ownership, dad jokes belong to everyone

an eclectic #BandcampFriday for me:
my favorite Fela album: https://felakuti.bandcamp.com/album/expensive-shit-1975
some good new afrobeat: https://ireke.bandcamp.com/album/ayo-dele
an excellent dreamy pop album I’ve been wanting for a while: https://lunali.bandcamp.com/album/when-a-thought-grows-wings
another excellent shoegazey dreampop album I’ve been enjoying: https://sealemonmusic.bandcamp.com/album/diving-for-a-prize
and some slowed versions of songs by a friend in England (recorded with one half of my favorite band in Bergen, Norway): https://sameagle.bandcamp.com/album/slow-versions-instrumentals
