really? I don’t know anyone that feels that way. mechanical, mechatronics, and software are my closest friend groups. maybe it’s just that the additional professional qualification of engineer in my province adds a clear distinction between engineering graduate and professional engineer

agreed the issue I have with how people use it is that it’s easy to just create more shit that they spew out into the world I’ve got no issue with people using tools to improve their work. I think it’s fair to say that AI is enough like predictive text and spell check when it comes to tools you can use at work. and like any tool, the user is still responsible for the end result my main problem with AI is that it is absolutely fucking our world (environmentally and economically) to create pure garbage that is thrown in my face every day. like, scale it back a bit everyone…

I don’t recall those episodes even though I definitely saw them, but that really doesn’t feel like that was the intent of the episode… that would be out of character edit: to be clear I do mean that it would be out of character to show deforestation as heroic, and that yes it must have been satire

wfh is not good for my body. it can be hard to get proper movement in on busy days where everything is a priority and shit keeps coming up. it definitely takes more intention to keep up an appropriate level of activity, both during the work day and before/after. I didn't have these issues before wfh

I finally had to move to Windows 11, and the UI is just so fucking broken. I did discover StartAllBack the other day which helped tremendously like who thought removing the ability to show seconds in the clock flyout was a good choice‽ pretty sure they're already using copilot in the start menu program search. I searched for "not" today because I wanted to open notepad. I got three results, none of which had "not" in their name. like jesus fucking christ that's so bad. one of them literally did not have any of the letters n o or t in the program name.

yes. I have much farther to go to get to the coffee machine or washroom, and people flag me down on the way to talk about whatever problem they're having. or I give a hand to someone who is moving something, or just take a minute to stand and see how the progress is on building the machine for me, very much different from just sitting or standing in front of my desk and going ten steps to the bathroom and 25 to the kitchen also for the second part, it's a lot easier to fall into the trap of never going "out" if you wfh and are already set to get comfy on the couch. if you have a commute, you're already out. lower barrier. not a big one, and mostly mental - but it's there. which is why common advice that I very much agree with is to *create* some sort of commute when you wfh, even if that's just a two minute walk around the block.

if companies chase the same profit levels, then yes. that is the inherent flaw with the state of capitalism in today's world. it requires the working class to get exhausted so the rich can have a greater unnecessary level of wealth and corporations can return profit to shareholders.

why can’t they both work from home if they both have the same position? how does the other guy working from home nagatively affect the parent? if your answer is “because then the parent has to go in”, then they don’t have the same position either the position allows for wfh, or it doesn’t.

most of my longer drives are 500 to 600 km with one or two short stops along the way. if there were a wagon that could start fully charged, and leave me with 250 km of range at my destination after those two short stops, I’d be interested in it as my sole vehicle I don’t really see how it would make this work for me without that capability. I don’t do daily commuting so that aspect of charging at home doesn’t appeal to me — I already only fill up maybe every other week at most

parents are often afforded flexibility by their bosses that other don’t receive, such as: “sorry I was late, the school drop off line was slow” –> while their coworker who was equally late because traffic was just exceptionally bad because of a crash is given a write-up “I won’t be able to cover so and so’s shift this weekend, my kid has a game” –> which leads to a coworker covering who also had plans, but the manager deems their plans less important and tells them they have to even though it’s not their dpmt I’ve seen both of these things play out exactly like that.
