At today’s hearing in the Hamm v. BCCNM professional conduct appeal, several groups are seeking leave to intervene. Listening to their submissions, I am struck by how readily discriminatory beliefs can be normalized. In the gallery, half the observers are wearing an "I ❤️ JK Rowling" sticker on their shirt thinking theirs is an act of defiance. I don't think it is. It strikes me as the worst kind of self harm. If healthcare professionals are permitted to incite discrimination against patients or colleagues on one explicitly prohibited ground, the same rationale can be used against people based on disability, faith or belief, place of origin, race, ethnicity, or any other protected characteristic.
