I feel like this has to be made up, downstream repack distros almost never show up on the top 10 usage stats. You will always see Ubuntu way ahead of Kubuntu. Not to mention 1Password is a pretty popular enterprise app and I have yet to see some insane sysadmin actually roll with arch as their distro of choice. Most are probably on RHEL or some other enterprise derivative.

I actually just did this recently with a BTRFS subvolume using a swap file and LUKS encryption. The old Fedora magazine article has the overall steps required and someone also made a guide for secure boot on I think the spiceworks forum. The catch is that secure boot will only allow signed images to be loaded which includes the hibernation swap image, meaning you have to use a customized kernel that allows unsigned hibernation images to load.

People are forgetting the AI hype train is reliant on the fact that businesses and individuals can’t host the AI themselves, which is rapidly changing. All that insane power that OpenAI and Anthropic have harnessed is suddenly completely useless when you can just spin up a competing model at home, with HF hosting a crap ton of finetuned models like uncensored/abliterated to do whatever you want with it. Even Deepseek released their full size models if you happen to have 400Gb (or 1.5Tb) of VRAM lying around. When the bubble (hopefully) pops, AI will just continue to be a tool that devs use where applicable, and likely not on a massive data center cloud as it migrates into consumer electronics.

My personal choice for security stuff is ubiquiti, but I'm sure someone here can find a super cheap doorbell camera that saves to an SD card and accomplishes the same thing. I'm really glad people didn't just fall over for this ad, and connected the dots on what Amazon is doing

Bans and heavy moderation of content. I'm glad some of the reddit copy communities here like DankMemes died quickly because it was being run by the same loser mods from reddit. So far I've only been banned from I think maybe 2 communities ever. The only one I remember is one of the NCD communities because the lead mod was a dumb dumb. I don't really care about complaints of specific instance users because unpopular opinions and comments deserve to be seen, otherwise you create an echo chamber. So long as there is no brigading, it is much healthier to see everyone's input. Also I hope the r/Chodi crowd never finds lemmy lol.

The thing that kicked off 2007 was that CDOs ended being largely made up of crappy mortgage bonds which caused their massive trillions in debt "value" to dissappear when the underlying bonds failed which was tied to people not paying their mortgage on crappy adjustable mortgage loans. After getting bailed out with a shit ton of tax money, the banks agreed not to repeat the same mistake by ensuring their trillions of debt trading doesn't depend on a single point of failure, so they've diversified it across multiple markets (like how a CDO was otherwise supposed to work) This type of warning shows up every now and then because the vulnerability is still there (since nothing really changed), but its much harder to knock it down without causing some type of collapse in multiple areas first. Right now, I think its estimated that private credit makes up about 40% of their investments into the AI boom, which is 1 trillion dollars exact. That's proportionally less than what CDOs were with mortgage bonds, but it's still entirely possible that a couple of hits in some businesses sectors could collapse the system. Iran actually succeeded in affecting multiple supply chains due to their strait closure, including AI, so if they continue on that path it might actually happen.

Right? I was like dang you're already half way there lol. The reason though is that they probably don't want to discourage payments because I have seen businesses refuse to use Monero in ransomware attacks because their insurance agreement complicates payout on a fundamentally untraceable currency. Even if Bitcoin is technically decentralized, they can report the transaction and specific currency blocks to whatever federal agency is responsible for fraud. Still, why not offer both and put a 5% discount on Monero.

Like.. what exactly lol? Most discussions about Linux here devolve into distro sledging lol. Even the joke stuff like Nvidia is from a bygone era. My personal recommendation is Fedora, but any competent distro is miles more user friendly than current windows 11.

The funny thing is gig work (proportionally) makes a lot more in plenty of 3rd wold countries because the business owner isn't taking a massive chunk of the income, and because it started out with everyone paying cash so there's no shoehorned services fees at every transaction. Its so lucrative that I've seen office workers run it as bonus income on their way to and from work if they travel by car or motorcycle. I always thought about making a free equivalent platform to stuff like Uber, but I think people would be too scared of the individual liability, despite Uber offering the absolute bare minimum.

I first predicted Biden throwing the election in 2023: https://lemmy.world/post/7717844/5052261

Then I spent the rest of the time making fun of you delusionals posting these crappy memes:

You ever notice how both FlyingSquid and PugJesus stopped posting 24/7 to the Political communities despite being the most outspoken for voting Biden/Harris? Have fun in 2028 with Newsom bud.

That's some garbage W/R and it also doesn't mean anything unless they share their account name so we can look at the gameplay stats which shows how good they actually are in whatever ship they play in lol. I've seen a guy with 10,000+ games that were almost all in PvE, so he was dogwater in literally every other gameode.

He actually offered to return to the US if they accepted that he would be given a public trial and not a military trial. Obama’s administration rejected the idea and said that their only guarantee they would give was that they wouldn’t torture him. Just to add my 2 cents: the list of countries that the US can’t extradite is not that long, especially when you exposed government corruption of the highest degree and you are considered a traitor. EDIT: Just to add my 2 cents: the list of countries that the US can’t extradite is not that long, especially when you exposed government corruption of the highest degree and you are considered a traitor. Just to add, Snowden also indirectly exposed the US’s leverage in several countries that you would otherwise assume would not cooperate with the US in any capacity. The fact that he ended up in Russia was because he couldn’t proceed to Ecuador which was his original planned location of asylum after leaving to Hong Kong. There are really very few countries the US can’t realistically coerce or run a black ops mission to go after him. China didn’t want the political baggage for no gain and Iran can’t even protect its own leaders from strategic bombing. That leaves basically Russia and its less than ideal former soviet allies.

I can trip the measly 15 amp breaker by drawing 1.5kW on two servers + turning on an amplifier that is somehow on the same circuit despite being in a different room quite far from where my servers are lol. On average though I only draw like 350W. The huge spike only happens if I run a miner/llm on both of my servers or the during the startup spike. The 1kW chunk comes from some RTX Quadro 6000s which each eat 250W each when maxxed out. EDIT: Want to mention that most machines report their power draw (from mobo) without IPMI, so you can use your favorite stats collector use it to form a rough estimate of kWh total in case you don’t have a proper meter that records usage.

I found a thread on reddit where some doofus was claiming the classic cube layout from Compiz is completly useless and nothing more than eye candy after someone was having trouble with setting up the cube on Wayfire. It is objectively the best way to handle multiple workspaces.

I don’t know why people forget even the first moon missions had a quarentine trailer/chamber used by the astronauts for this exact reason. They were pretty sure they weren’t gonna find microbial life on the moon but they sure as hell weren’t gonna take the risk in case there actually was.

Even on windows I’ve seen random people using libre office instead. The last time I opened excel it actually died trying to handle my copy paste of a simple list.
