Perl was weird, messy, brilliant, and absolutely foundational to the early web.

Before modern frameworks and JavaScript everywhere, Perl powered CGI scripts, forms, counters, search tools, admin panels, and the kind of text processing that made the first dynamic websites possible.

A lot of people remember Perl as a joke. History says otherwise.

I’ve used Linux for roughly 30 years.

For 20+ of those years, Debian was my daily desktop driver.

So I did not expect an Arch-based distro to change my mind this quickly.

Then I tried CachyOS.

A few days later, it was on my main desktop, my new System76 Pangolin Pro, and even my wife’s Intel/NVIDIA laptop.

Fast, polished, gaming-friendly, and practical.

Debian is still great.

CachyOS changed my view.

Don’t “rebound” to a Linux distro just because it looks like Windows/macOS. That familiarity sets the wrong expectations, and when Linux behaves differently people assume it’s “broken” and go right back.

Linux isn’t a skin or a drop-in replacement — it’s a new workflow. Learn it on its own terms and the switch actually sticks.

Switching operating systems isn’t just a technical migration. It’s a habit migration. You’re moving muscle memory, assumptions, and identity—“this is how a computer works”—from one world to another.

sudo isn’t “nice to have.” It’s core infrastructure.

Its long-time maintainer, Todd C. Miller, is looking for a sponsor to keep sudo maintained and secure.

If your company has a security budget, this is one of the highest-leverage OSS sponsorships you can make.

I’m moving my daily driver from my home-built Ryzen 7 5800X3D desktop to a System76 Pangolin Pro running CachyOS.

The RX 7800 becomes an OCuLink eGPU. The old desktop gets an RX 7600 and becomes my 11-year-old’s first full-time Linux PC.

Portable workstation, docked gaming, local AI, and one less Windows machine in the house.

I bought a System76 Pangolin Pro with my own money and am moving my RX 7800 to it as an OCuLink eGPU. Here’s why it makes sense for my Linux workflow.

Linux desktop adoption doesn’t fail because new users can’t learn.

It fails when we welcome them with a pop quiz.

When someone says “I’m trying Linux,” and the first response is “Actually, it’s GNU/Linux,” that’s not help — it’s semantic gatekeeping. Status signaling disguised as “accuracy.” And it pushes curious newcomers right back to Windows/macOS.

New Linux desktop users don’t leave because they can’t learn—they leave because the community makes them feel unwelcome. The “Linux is just a kernel” / “Actually it’s GNU/Linux” correction is often semantic gatekeeping…

Music taught me before school did. I literally recited “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” on day one of Senior English—thanks to Maiden. Here’s how that led to GNU/Linux, attribution, and remix culture:

2026 won’t be “the year of the Linux desktop” but it might be the clearest turning point yet.
What’s different now:
🖥️ Wayland maturity + GNOME/KDE momentum
🎮 Proton keeps improving (anti-cheat is still the big cliff)
📦 Flatpak/Flathub making app installs way less distro-dependent
💥 Push factors: Win10 EOL + Win11 friction, Intel Macs being sunset

🏰 The Cathedral has eaten the Bazaar.
Corporate acquisitions, license shifts, and platform lock-in have centralized what was once open and free. Open source is still alive—but less accessible than ever.
