human-things interaction

(formerly @0x11eaea) I'm still trying to find a new usage pattern, but for now: follow this account for research announcements/discussion/networking, or lea@mastodon.social for "main". (I'll boost research posts to there as well.)

@FRiaK I’ve been so hype about this since I saw it in the CHI program!

@frankelavsky Two of my favorite physical media for introducing the topic of productive surprise in physical craft are tie-dye and [specifically the American interpretation of] raku pottery. I also really like the weaving practice of “network drafting” for this, but it takes a while to set up what that is and why it’s interesting; here’s my favorite of my own talks on this topic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=on_sK8KoObo

@frankelavsky Of course I’m always happy to have a chat about this topic, too! You know where to find me, yes?

@yaxu 1) it is *so bad*; 2) in my HCI circles, about half of my collaborators prefer Word (which I personally find worse) and IMO the infighting about it is bleakly funny, like, don’t worry, they’re both awful!; 3) hey if you ever want to collaborate on a submission to CHI/UIST/DIS, I would be v interested (and I’ll do the LaTeX wrangling part). :)

@yaxu@post.lurk.org post-2020 even “senior academics + research students” is optimistic — it may have stabilized somewhat but in 2023/2024 it was definitely A Thing that, while the PhD students were being told they had to go to conferences to network with senior academics, the senior academics themselves were frequently opting out (for time/money/health reasons). 🙃
