@mgorny@social.treehouse.systems Gentoo allows and encourages personal system customization to an extreme degree. From an enterprise-provided laptop with a stock DE + stock theme/background to a repurposed handheld console running a custom kernel + obscure-WM-with-a-sum-total-of-8-downloads, the world is the user's oyster. Everyone interacts with computers in different ways. Gentoo understands that. Lovely Complex became one of the pieces of media most dear to my heart - story and OST - right from the time I binged it practically overnight during high school. Our cello section in the school orchestra jammed on this pizzicato opening so many times during rehearsal breaks c. 2011 ❤️ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k98Neou3l_s

Ok, as an intro manual for kids, it's actually not that bad! The technical parts in particular are very complete (even bauds per seconds are mentioned!), given the target audience. The most glaring flaw, which sadly is a pretty big one: There isn't the slightest mention on the topic of privacy (e.g., don't tell your new internet friends your real name, address, where you go to school). Simpler times, indeed. /thread 🧵

And here's the composer himself, Hironosuke Sato, playing the same song live with his band: 佐藤ひろのすけ - world's end ～地球の果て～ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fi0HdBHr1hU

Now, this ED intro in particular has been giving me a burst of nostalgia since I first heard it, and after the latest episode I finally pinpointed why: its resemblance - stylistically - to the Lovely Complex OST. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9lhRpfmilE

Netiquette, some unwritten rules: Before sending a message to a newsgroup, always read the preceding messages for at least a week, so that you don't get mixed up on a discussion that you don't know anything about. (Unwanted comments? On the Internet? I'm shocked, shocked!) Try not to criticize behaviors that may seem odd to you, as in other countries they might be entirely natural. Don't write in CAPS. On the Internet, a phrase in CAPS is a shout. UNDERSTOOD? The official language of the Internet is English. (馬鹿外人...) Don't send the same messages to many different newsgroups, even if they're focused on similar topics. This is called spamming and newsgroup users hate it. 🧵

Search Engines*! ChatGPT Ask Jeeves! "Search engines are powered by very powerful computers that work day and night to explore content on the Internet. They go through every document and memorize every single word." *(Google, what's that?) 🧵

FTP "There exist on the network digital warehouses with all kinds of programs that we can access and use for free... or almost." (FTP away, kids! A wide world of fun surprises in executable formats awaits. It's a new millenium, what can go wrong?) 🧵

@bw As someone who relied on HTML for People just this year - I'm in tech, but hadn't touched anything web-related in over a decade - thank you for writing and sharing it with the world!

IRC, some unwritten rules When you enter a channel, greet everyone. If you don't, someone might get offended. When accessing a channel for the first time, ask the users there to give you some piece of advice. Chat users are always very available for "newbie" questions. (Always. Very. Available.) 🧵

@marinheiro Going back to our discussion last week. An actual RFC 1149 implementation! @pitrh
