Accessibility isn't just a screen reader problem, it's a wheelchair user being told to wear a diaper because the plane has no accessible toilet. These firsthand accounts from disabled flyers are brutal and the physical world is failing people just as badly as the digital one.

Modern TUIs claim to be minimalist and efficient. But for screen reader users, they're a nightmare. This breakdown shows why text-mode interfaces break accessibility assumptions and what needs to change.

A spinner tells a screen reader user nothing unless something is announced. Loading, done and failed all need a status message, and users need to know whether they can leave. Async-heavy SaaS UIs get this wrong constantly.

Email accessibility gets skipped constantly... Headings, link text, image alt, and contrast in transactional and marketing email all break the same way they do on a page, but land straight in someone's inbox. We need to either keep emails simple or push for better email clients...

AI is speeding up how fast digital products get built, and testing hasn't caught up. Level Access's research confirms what anyone doing audits already knows, teams are shipping AI-generated interfaces faster than anyone is checking them for accessibility, and the gap is widening, not closing. Speed without verification is just a bigger backlog...

The accessibility skills gap starts in school and I'm still seeing devs fresh out of college not even aware of the term accessibility. We need to get those skills into their hands before they write production code, badly. Teach Access put together free self-paced courses aimed at educators who want to bake accessibility into CS and design curricula instead of bolting it on later as a "nice to have" unit... Please utilize this!

SwiftUI gives you a lot of accessibility for free, and that's exactly why so many iOS apps stop there. Free automatic behavior isn't the same as correct semantics, you still have to write labels, hints, values, and traits by hand or VoiceOver users get garbage. Good rundown if you're building iOS and treating a11y as a checkbox.

Most accessibility bugs I see aren't one-off mistakes, they're the same broken pattern copy-pasted across every modal, form, and dropdown in the codebase. Treating accessibility as a component and architecture problem, not a checklist item, is the only way fixes actually stick.

The disability rights movement gets written out of history as a footnote. This new digital archive is trying to fix that, and it's a reminder that accessibility work today stands on decades of organizing most people never learned about.

Ashton Applewhite on ageism, ableism, and how the two reinforce each other as disability becomes a near-universal experience with age. Send this to anyone who treats accessibility as a niche concern.

Plain language is an accessibility requirement, not a style preference. Cognitive and learning disabilities need it as much as low vision users need contrast. This piece connects technical writing clarity to actual comprehension, worth sharing with content teams who think accessibility stops at alt text.

Your page isn't inaccessible because of design. It's engineering failure. Full-stack hiring + AI code + compliance-first mentality broke it. Pages WITH ARIA have more errors. Use native HTML. https://ilo.im/16c238 #a11y #WebDev
A clean automated scan is a starting line, not a pass. Tanveer Khan walks through the interaction patterns that only show up with manual testing. Focus management, custom widgets and state changes are where most of the real failures live.

A marketplace rejected a WordPress a11y scanner because it cited wrong or outdated WCAG criteria. The dev audited all 25 rules and found eight bad mappings. If your tool reports the wrong success criterion, your client files the wrong remediation ticket. Every rule-to-SC mapping in an auditing tool needs its own review.

"AI can make a strong auditor more effective" is the right framing, and the one most AI accessibility tools get backwards by pitching themselves as a replacement for the auditor instead. AI is good at flagging candidates and drafting alt text, it's bad at judging whether a screen reader experience actually makes sense. Worth a read for how to fold AI into a testing workflow without letting it own the final call.

Disabling a submit button until every field validates feels like good UX until a screen reader user has no idea why they're stuck. Give people an error message instead of a wall.

There's no such thing as an accessibility score. Either you meet the conformance criteria or you don't. The moment you turn accessibility into a number, you give people permission to optimize the number instead of the experience.

Every interactive element needs an accessible name or a screen reader user has no idea what it does. This is a solid rundown of where that name actually comes from: visible label, aria-label, aria-labelledby, alt text, title, and the order the accessibility tree picks between them when more than one is present.

Karl Groves nails something I run into constantly: passing 92% of a test suite does not mean a product is 92% accessible. Conformance scores flatten a binary, sometimes-broken experience into a number that sounds better than it is.

DeepMind's SL2T model translates sign language as its own language, not as word-for-word substitution. Sign languages have their own grammar, and treating them as English-with-hands has been a persistent, damaging mistake in assistive design... So far. It's worth watching how well this does outside of these demos.
