Typography News No. 64
Color fonts can now be customized in Affinity 3.2, and I tested way too many typefaces to list here, but I did add chapters so you can see what works and what doesn't.
TL;DR
COLRv0 without hardcoded SVG hex values work perfectly
COLRv1 using CSS var() to color fonts also works perfectly
COLRv1 using built-in coloring methods like PaintColrLayers does not work
With any of these, if SVG hex values are set, they will override the CPAL options available in Affinity.
**I AM NOT AN EXPERT ON COLOR FONTS** Correct me here or in the comments on YouTube. No one was talking about this, so I did my best to cover the topic ✌️

You can edit (some) color fonts in-app with Affinity 3.2 🤯
When it works, it's amazing. Much testing ahead.

@yanone@typo.social I don't know. I think it probably parallels any other industry: top 200 songs in music, top 200 shoes on a given population's feet, etc.
Though I totally get your point that it's not entirely shocking to see the typefaces listed.
I think it will be interesting to watch newer releases climb the charts, or to look for viral moments. Like, would we have seen Arial in the top 10 during Brat summer? Would Gazetta have been there when The Life of a Showgirl cover premiered?
FontBase just added a rankings page that shows the 200 most popular fonts based on what people have activated in the app 👀
https://fontba.se/tools/rankings
I've always wondered if the "popular" or "trending" sections on marketplaces are accurate or if there's a thumb on the scale. Obviously this is only sampling FontBase users, but it's still cool to see the data, and it feels like it should be free of any funny business.

@morningtype When Black Foundry sold their IP to TTF, I interviewed Jérémie Hornus and this was his reply to a similar question I asked him:
"The Black Foundry brands now belongs to TTF, they will maintain the font collection, keeping it alive and also make it grow and expand (some WIP project, scripts extensions etc.). Black Foundry as a company will not exist in the near future but it’s font collection will, and may keep evolving too (for example there are a few ‘alpha’ fonts that need to be developed into full fonts, other fonts have WIP additional writing systems, they may see the light anytime sooner or later)."
Ofc this is ONE foundry, so it's only one data point, but maybe this info can help in some way.

@hugocarvalho No, I won't be at Fontstand unfortunately, but I will gladly accept some goodies! 🙃

@typearture@typo.social I will add a correction about the shadow. I did question myself after the words came out of my mouth! haha
I'm definitely interested in learning more about color fonts. I kind of stumbled my way through this one, which I think worked fine for the context of showing how confusing it might be for the average user (and how cool it is when they do work), but it would be nice to be educated the next time around. Any resources you can recommend for color and/or variable fonts?
