Sadly I didn’t do this on #OpenBSD, as my current hardware just doesn’t fit it, or is currently being used for something else that’s taking most of it’s compute power. But! My #NetBSD-running rpi2, which was previously only hosting a syslogd(8) server for centralised logging + lighttpd & a cgi script for web-based log viewing, is now also my local dns host. I used base’s unbound(8) (which is chroot’d by default which is neat), a custom shell script called by a cron job that pulls down adblock lists and transforms them into a unbound config I can include: in unbound.conf(5) with awk(1). What pushed me to do this was my previous dns host solution, NextDNS, was having horrid latency issues, so why not kill latency entirely by having it local! I guess I should have expected this for a SaaS service. My new local dns seems to work well. Thanks #NetBSD

@OpenBSDAms@mastodon.bsd.cafe when 8.0-release hits, with the new cpus option for vm.conf or -p option for vmctl, will obsd.ams possibly support tiered multicore instances for a higher rate? not having mp is a blocker for me using this vps service, so i’m curious if this is planned. thanks!

I fucking hate that the whole traditionalist unix movement in the linux community has been co-opted by idiots like luke smith and lunduke. Fuck! I want a simple, easily understandable system, minus the stupid over engineered bullshit. Give me hacky shell scripts! Give me cron jobs! Give me lock files! And while doing all this, be a decent human being and accept people for who they are, fuck! I'm just gonna continue using OpenBSD, cos at least people who are shitty get instantly put on people's ignore lists... Glad i switched.

@obj@mastodon.bsd.cafe Search for packages pkg_info -Q foobar the correct way to do this on -stable is -aQ, not -Q as then it will search both packages-stable paths AND packages paths in your installurl As per the official FAQ

I swear microsoft’s model from the getgo was “sell crap so we can make money from abusing our users technical inability and need for support”. Apple’s model isn’t much better: “assume the user is rich and dumb enough to just buy a new machine when something slightly goes wrong and force their hand so they can’t fix it themselves anyways” Apple used to be cool with some of their early ppc macs and classic macs with right to repair and respecting the user but since steve jobs came back, imo, their company has been destined down a very bad path in terms of consumer rights. Don’t get me started on smartphones and tablets… Ill keep using community maintained operating systems on old reliable business machines thank you very much. That way, i’m actually treated like a human. #RUNBSD

Finally upgraded the CPU in my OptiPlex 7010 MT from an i5-3470 to an i7-3770. It's running great! #OpenBSD is great for old hardware.

Update: WIP REPL hacking support by way of putting the main gameloop in a sb-thread to be non-blocking of the REPL prompt. This recording is old, but i had also added an easier wrapper to move-piece that is intended for use in the REPL

i fixed the issue with running the binary of cl-chess when compiled with the makefile not blocking its thread which would result in an immediate exit. Also- the binary will drop you into a repl environment by default which’ll let you hack at game state. shown here also is the new move function wrapper mentioned in the previous reply

got basic gameloop handling done. users can run (start-game) and the game will track moves and captures, as well as enforce turn order. no check or check mate detection yet, this is much more complex and will be implemented later.

What led up to my switch to #openbsd? I was fucking around with linux distros among other unixen in libvirt and qemu-kvm on my gentoo box to avoid distrohopping cos i was starting to get frustrated with the linux ecosystem and community chaos. Eventually i installed openbsd in a vm and really liked it. Nuked my gentoo install with openbsd and went full send. Never looked back. though occasionally ill dick around with weird niche poweruser linux distros when bored on spare hardware.

topgrade 60.91s user 95.21s system 16% cpu 15:32.98 total doing a distributed update with topgrade across a fleet of about 15 different network appliances, random sbcs, and vms on my home network only took around 15 minutes. thats on average, 1 minute per system. i don’t even have fast internet, (100mbit), maybe the mirrors were just forgiving tonight

Since every system wide config that packages use is in /etc i didn't need to reconfigure anything either. God #OpenBSD rocks

@lw@mastodon.bsd.cafe I don't think you can do it with route, as the stacks are quite separated. But- the af-to keyword in pf.conf might be what you're looking for.
