Yes. Because with an EV you live at the gas station. People need to stop thinking about EVs like cars that need to be fueled. They’re more like phones that need to be charged.

A washer that takes that long would be kind of insane, but a drying time in the 4+ hour range isn’t that insane imo.

He did intend it to be a Vietnam allegory, with the Rebels as the Viet Cong. He was explicit about it, but for obvious reasons Disney doesn't make a huge deal out of that. But you're also right that the Campbell stuff was intentional, too.

You can have me em dashes when you pry them from my cold, dead hands. This looks like AI for actual reasons, not meme reasons, and em dashes as a sign of LLM usage is pretty outdated at this point; most AI-brained people have their system prompts set up to tell the models not to use them.

I assume it’s got a pretty small capacity. Bigger capacity washers and dryers take about the same amount of time to wash four times as many clothes, but they take the same amount of time to dry as three or four loads–you just get them all during the same cycle, without having to move anything over.

True UBI should replace those other services, because it should be a basic income that allows people to survive without a job. You shouldn’t need additional health care because we should have medicare for all. You shouldn’t need low income housing because your UBI should be enough to pay for a modest home. You shouldn’t need food stamps because UBI should cover it. The fact that it’s always framed as “$600 bribe!!!” is infuriating and absolutely wrong, because that’s far from “basic.” “Basic” would mean enough to live on, without requirement.

If you cannot get the right burger from an Al customer service bot, it is not an appropriate tool for education, tutoring, or any other high-stakes task. It’s not an appropriate tool for those things, no. But this is a fallacious statement. These companies are not utilizing good AI models in their drive through software, they’re using the cheapest, most bare-minimum models they can possibly get their hands on. But even if they use good models and do solve AI food ordering, even if they do manage to make it as good as a human for the task, it will still not be an appropriate tool for education or tutoring.

I would bet the restaurant isn’t responsible for the AI images. More likely the restaurant didn’t upload images and the app “helpfully” generated an image for them. The owners of the restaurant probably either have no idea that this happened or have bigger things to worry about.

There are like six manufacturers that let you buy a full-featured laptop without a Windows license included in the price, and one of them is Apple. None of them are budget-friendly brands, except the Chromebook manufacturers who are selling near-e-waste. Microsoft has done a gigantic amount of work signing deals with OEMs over the past forty years to make sure that Windows is the default and keeping it off the device is hard. Even refurbishers and second-hand resellers often put Windows on a device by default. It’s massively easier to buy a device without an OS at all than it used to be, and even with that, you have to either pay for a more expensive machine or settle for something really underpowered.

The point of it is being able to play online with friends running the official version of the game on mobile or consoles. That means you need Bedrock Edition. If you don’t care about multiplayer or your friends all play on computer, then you should probably use Java Edition, which is natively available on Linux anyway. Also, Pi Edition is thirteen years old and was massively hobbled from the main production version back when it was new, so if you want a free Minecraft experience, you’re better off using Luanti.

Yeah, I think it’s a fair characterization, I just wanted to clarify that it is indeed based on Unix. To my knowledge I’ve never used BSD. I didn’t move away from Windows until I, like you say, just didn’t have the bandwidth to do more than one experimental thing with my computer. Windows pushed me out a few years back, and I went with Linux because of the breadth of support. I’ve got tons of time to do research, though. By which I mean read random Wikipedia articles in the bathroom, TBH. I found a big tree somewhere on there a long time ago, showing the progression from PDP Unix all the way to the latest FreeBSD (with Linux as a little tag on the side, lol).

People write things themselves sometimes, I don’t know what to tell you. I’ve hand-written 11k lines of code in the last few months, and a lot of that code got squashed into one commit. It’s not impossible. Now, is it likely that it was written by AI? Sure. But I don’t see any proof, and absent any, I think that sounding the AI alarm is irresponsible.

Certainly such a narrow view will never come back to bite me!” Get off your soapbox and actually try to help instead of screaming about people who don’t even know that what they’re doing is wrong.

It’s the same thing it’s always been. Since the early 2010s we’ve been using neural networks to do voice transcription. They just decided in the last five years that neural networks = AI (so they can get the investor dollars). But voice recognition is basically a solved problem, and that solution was neutral networks. Has been since the late 90s, with ANNs and then RNNs. Same with language translation. Google Translate started using NMT in 2016.

Yeah, those details are firmly in the “deep magic” realm for me. I suppose I could figure them out if I wanted to spend the time trying, but I’d rather just assume that Apple’s engineers know what they’re doing. (And know that it really doesn’t affect me either way if they don’t)

I’m not seeing any actual AI use in the linked commit. There are some instructions for how contributors should use AI (which is honestly a good idea for every project, even if you just say “don’t,” as it can reduce the amount of low-quality nonsense that comes in), but no actual evidence that the person who pushed the commit is using AI. I really wish people would learn what actual AI usage looks like before they called “AI” on something like this. It weakens the case when people call out actual AI usage and abuse. dansup may be an awful person, but if he is this isn’t why.

Lol, nice. SUS is “Single Unix Specification” or “Single Unix System,” I can’t remember which (I think the former). It’s the name of the certification that MacOS actually has. I do have to say, I didn’t realize that they were close enough as to be co-portable. That’s really interesting.

So, there are a couple of things. Here is where I push up my glasses and say “well–ahem–” First, true, BSD is not itself Unix. That specific OS (which began with the PDP-7 Operating System in the late 1960s) really only existed until the late 80s or early 90s, when Bell Labs stopped working on it. However, it is literally Unix-based. The first version of BSD was forked (as we’d call it today) from the Research Unix source code at UC Berkeley. Since then, the various BSD derivatives and distros have all iterated upon or forked from that initial Unix code. I don’t think any are officially registered as SUS systems (but there are only a handful that are), which means that a pedant would say that BSD is technically “Unix-like.” But it is based on Unix, it’s a part of the Unix family, just like Windows 11 is part of the NT family. MacOS is also part of the Unix family (I think it might be or used to have been SUS-registered, actually). Linux isn’t, and I think I remember hearing that Torvalds didn’t even use the Research Unix source code to write the Linux kernel originally, but it does follow a lot of the SUS spec and so is definitely Unix-like.

The other two answers are excellent: only a human can teach anyone how to be a human, and AIs are structurally incapable of understanding any concept sufficiently to teach it. I might further add: the current structure of AI as a wholly for-profit enterprise adds a level of cynicism and a susceptibility to corruption that even a for-profit human educator is not subject to; that is to say, do we want any corporation (really, any single entity) to be responsible, not only for the structure of education, but for its entire expression? Even if a hypothetical perfect AI were completely benevolent, and owned by the people, it would still represent a bottleneck of thought and idea that would heterogenize our society. But we don’t live in that world, so it’s almost a certainty that education would be for sale to the highest bidder. You think historical revisionism is bad now? What if BMW could pay OpenAI to downplay the role of Germany in World War II?

Both are accurate. Something can be Unix-like (using many of the same paradigms and keywords and such) without being derived from the source code of Unix, but BSD actually is originally based on that code. Linux is Unix-like but not Unix-based. BSD is both, as is MacOS. Windows is neither. SUS means “Single Unix Specification,” I think. When it went from being an OS to being a spec, that’s what they called the certification. Though “SUSpect” would be a great pun on the idea, yeah. Big “Among Us” opportunities.

The argument I’ve always heard isn’t that it helps them with their work, but that it helps them with the rest of their life. Since so much of their work has to be done during the day, having more time at night to go to the store and such could potentially be nice. It’s still dumb, but it’s slightly less dumb.

lol, this isn’t an ad. This is a page on their menu clearly several scrolls deep on an online ordering site they don’t control. Regardless of who you are, this is hard to find unless you’re looking for it. And when you add on top that the owner of every single local restaurant I’ve ever met has been some version of overworked by everything that directly affects their ability to pay rent, calling them a bad manager for not caring about something that doesn’t is absolutely insane.

Ah yes. The 50-year-old, likely immigrant, small business owner of the local chip shop, who basically wakes up in the morning, spends four hours fighting with suppliers and dealing with payroll, goes in to work at noon and stays until midnight because half her staff called off, and is constantly about £5 away from going out of business, she’s a bad manager. Her nephew offered to set up Doordash for her, but then he went off to university last year, and then a few months ago she added a Large size of the Cheesy Chips and Cheesy Chips with Curry Sauce, but she couldn’t figure out how to upload the image and didn’t know that the app would just make one for her, but it’s her fault that the images are AI. She sees ads everywhere that say that AI is amazing and perfect and spends negative minutes per week on Lemmy and the news and the internet in general so she doesn’t know all of the problems with AI, so when someone points out that there are AI images on her menu and she says “huh, neat,” that’s her problem. Being a scold against AI use is one thing when it’s a software engineer or graphic designer who should know better, and it’s totally fair for tech bros who do know better, but for complete normies this is a ludicrous complaint. I’m so frustrated by this inane binary purity test. You want to make things better? Don’t scold or say “bad manager,” educate people. The problem is Sam Altman of OpenAI, not Ashok Kumari of the London East Side Chip Castle.

Ooof. Yeah, I’ve met other parents like that. “so dangerous and full of immigrants” definitely paints a picture, for sure. There are folks all over the place who feel, despite evidence to the contrary, like the world is so much more dangerous than it used to be. I think that those two things have to go together–the whole “Fox News makes people afraid of immigrants for fun and profit” thing, though I have also met some left-of-center people in that same boat, so who knows.

It suggests that it would. It is suggesting that the quality of the models’ ability to correctly understand a fast food order indicates its fitness to be used in teaching, but I would say that even a model which can flawlessly take a cheeseburger order—even a model which can flawlessly mimic the action of teaching—wouldn’t be appropriate for the task. The quality of its output is unrelated to its fitness to the purpose.

Actually, with regards to the USS Abraham Lincoln, they actually can’t. They’ve mismanaged this war so poorly that they can’t actually accomplish the single most basic part of military management: logistics. Genghis Khan knew that he had to maintain supply lines to win wars. Julius Caesar knew it. Alexander the Great. Cyrus the Great. Chandragupta. Sun Tzu knew it. It’s the most basic, most obvious part of leading a military, and they failed at it so hard that sailors are jumping off of boats.

I mentioned two of those above, and the third is one of the six I was thinking about (alongside System76 and Slimbook, etc; Pine is getting out of the game for the time being, iirc). I own a Framework and love it, but none of them are mid-range brands. None of them ship worldwide. Apple is…well, arguably worse than Microsoft, and they literally only have one mid-range laptop SKU. Likewise, Acer and HP (and maybe Dell?) each have, like, one laptop that will ship without an OS. This is what I’m saying. Trying to buy a laptop without Windows installed means accepting that you’ll either be buying at a higher rung on the pricing ladder (not that it’s never worth it, but not everyone can afford to climb), or you’ll be buying a disposable machine.
