Our friends from the National Coalition of Independent Scholars are conducting a global study on the experiences of #IndependentScholars and researchers. They’re looking into the highs and lows of doing research outside traditional academic institutions.

They’re interested in speaking with independent scholars of all kinds and based anywhere in the world.

If this sounds like you, feel free to reach out and take part! Please contact Linda Baines at BaSISBook2025 [at] gmail [dot] com

Recommendations for Scholarly Publishers and Journal Editors to Mitigate Barriers to Open Access Publishing for Researchers with Weak Institutional Ties

The recommendations aim to provide a basis for keeping the publication process as free as possible from barriers for authors with weak institutional ties, in order to enable an inclusive and epistemically just scientific publication system. The recomendations were developed at the TIB – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology in the course of the IDAHO project (IDentificAtion of Hurdles to Open Access Publishing for Researchers with Weak Institutional Ties: Epistemic Injustice in S

📌 Our literature review paper has just been published!

It presents a broad and comprehensive overview of 82 barriers & challenges faced by authors seeking to publish #OA.

Our analysis shows that addressing obstacles related to OA provision alone will not be sufficient to ensure #equitable, #diverse, and #fair publishing opportunities. It is essential to recognize and engage with the broader systemic issues that shape #ScholarlyCommunication

We’re happy to share that we successfully wrapped up the IDAHO project at #OAT25 with a presentation of the final findings from our mixed-method study!

We found that researchers with weak institutional ties do experience affiliation-specific #barriers. To address this, we derive five recommendations for academic publishers to mitigate these obstacles and make #OA publishing more diverse and equitable.

For more details, take a look at the slides: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.17152714

Di

IDAHO and KOMET – making the long tail of Open Access more visible - TIB-Blog

The more publications are freely accessible in open access, the more the focus will shift to whose publications they are. Who can position their voice in the academic publishing process in such a way that it can be heard by everyone? Anyone who looks into this question quickly realises that we do not have equal opportunities here. One reason for this injustice can be found in the oligopoly structures of the scientific publishing industry, which are geared towards extraordinarily high profits. Th
