Was habt ihr gelernt?

#WritersCoffeeClub 10 Apr.: What's something other writers swear by that you just don't get?

Writing a first draft in one go. And revising umpteen times after that.

I need to edit while writing. I can't continue before my sentence, paragraph, chapter is the way I really want it to be.
(Happy to meet others who think like me here!)
And I only do one last round of editing the completed manuscript.

#PhantastikPrompts 7.4.

Show, don't tell.

#WritersCoffeeClub 12 Apr: How does being a writer influence your life outside of the work?

For me, there is no outside of being a writer. My whole life is research. Ideas and sentences just pop into my head out of the blue. I take notes anywhere anytime.
Almost all of my friends are writers, too.
And - unfortunately - I have no regular income and never know how much money will be in my bank account ...

#PhantastikPrompts 3.4.: Haben Augenfarben in euren Geschichten eine Bedeutung?

Nein.

Was macht es individuell?

#PhantastikPrompts 31.

#WritersCoffeeClub 9 Apr: What is your favorite way to introduce a character's appearance?

I don't describe my characters' appearance too much. Often not at all. I want my readers to get their own pictures in their minds.
If there is a feature that is important for the story, I might make someone comment on it ('Nice glasses, are they new?").

As you can imagine, I don't like long descriptions or character cards. My own vision is so much better 😉

#WritersCoffeeClub 26 March: How much of a break or hiatus do you take between works?

A few hours, maybe. But when I finish one manuscript I have usually already started with another one and maybe a third one I write with a co-author. So I might take an afternoon free or maybe one day to do something about my neglected household or go for a walk.

Do you have a writerly 'third place'?

Sorry, I don't quite understand the question. Do we speak of the social environments of home ("first place") and workplace ("second place")?
Then the answer is no. As a professional writer mostly working from home my first and second places are writerly enough.

Not really.
But I always try to take the rest of the day off and do something nice after sending my manuscript to one of my publishers.
I did, of course, celebrate winning a literary award - but that was in 2020 during the pandemic and the ceremony was online, so it was a very lonely glass of champagne ...

#WritersCoffeeClub 7 Apr: Do you combine poetic fragments and prose paragraphs in your work?

Sometimes. As always it depends on the story. My protagonist may write haikus. Or a child may be making up a funny poem. Or we slip into a protagonist's brain to listen to her poetic view of nature.

#WritersCoffeeClub 4 April: Do you switch between past and present tense? How do you make it work?

It depends on the story. I often use both tenses but not in the same scene, sometimes not even in the same story.

In my last novel I wrote the main part in the past tense telling my protagonist's story quite conventionally. In between those scenes there are short chapters in which we slip into her head: a first-person narrator who uses the present tense.

#WritersCoffeeClub 3 Apr: Have you studied writing? Did it prepare you, or did you learn more by doing?

In Germany there were no formal courses until quite recently. 20 years ago, there were not even many books about this topic in German. There were books in English, but my main approach was just reading a lot (attentively!) and learning by doing.
On the other hand, I'm a translator and so I've always had to do with writing and phrasing and finding the right words.

I'm okay. So many people I don't know read my books anyway. Some like them, some don't. That's the way it is.
My father especially liked my short stories which made me very happy as he was not a reader.
My children sometimes say, they can't read my books because they always hear my voice. But one of my daughters listens to the audiobooks and I love that she has fun listening.

#WritersCoffeeClub 2 Apr: Visual Presentation: How do white space and typography become meaningful elements of literary forms?

Paragraphs and their white space are important for structuring my prose, emphasising certain sentences and thus making the story easily readable.
That's the only part I can influence. Typography lies in the responsibility of the publishers.
I would prefer a sans-serif fonts - they are more accessible to people with dyslexia. I find that more important than design.

I don't explicitly try to connect with my readers 😉. Sometimes they connect with me, I like that. Sometimes I meet them at readings or other literary events.
PR is not my cup of tea. So I just announce new books on social media, answer questions or comments, and leave the rest to my publishers.

How do you organise your notes?

I put all my notes in different files (aptly named) in a special folder in my project folder on my laptop. If I put them elsewhere, I will not be able to find them again.
Smaller notes I put on the virtual noticeboard on the right of my manuscript in my writing programme (Papyrus Autor) until I've used them.
