In April, the Starmer government passed an Act of Parliament enabling the police to shut down any protest they deem to have a “cumulative” impact on the community. The only protests that have ever succeeded are those with a cumulative impact. Effective protest is now illegal.

The question in my mind is how out of touch with reality does someone need to be to buy such things during a climate emergency? How many Telegraph editorials add up to a downpayment on one of these contraptions? Or is it a giant Up-Yours to other people and the rest of the living world?

Here's today's column on the astonishing, ongoing mistreatment of people with #ME/CFS. Please spread it far and wide: the only thing which can break the media's wall of indifference is seeing an article about the issue go viral. Thank you. 1/2

The government must know full well that many people have neither the space nor the money to store extra food in their homes. It is individuating responsibility for a collective problem. As usual, it is the poorest and most excluded who will suffer from it. 🧵

Instead of using a photo of the current conflagrations caused by climate breakdown, the Telegraph uses a pic of a wind turbine burning ... in February 2025. Because that's the important thing: 17 months ago a turbine ignited. Caption: "It’s time to cease building wind turbines".

There aren't many days when you can kayak off Start Point, renowned for one of Britain's most dangerous tidal races. But yesterday the stars aligned, so I bunked off work. Delighted to see Rupert Kirkwood (the Lone Kayaker) out there. He took this picture of me +1. Before you ask: yes, it's real. 🧵

The Jason Arday story is by no means the biggest scandal at Cambridge University. I'm sure the media is going to pick this up and run with it in just the same way ...
Or is the exaggerated CV of one Black professor somehow more important than this?

A short thread on “legitimate concerns”. The phrase is used repeatedly by UK government ministers. The Home Secretary is at it again this week. But only ever - as far as I can tell - in one context: people’s response to the arrival of asylum seekers.
Please read whole 🧵before responding - thanks

Land Rover also does a Discovery Metropolitan edition. The name suggests it's for use in cities. Because you never know how high the kerb / cyclist / pedestrian you need to mount might be. And because there must be no limit to the pointless environmental harm you inflict.

The arguments trotted out against leaving fossil fuels in the ground are strikingly similar to the arguments trotted out against ending the slave trade, 230 years ago.

When I discuss huge systemic issues, people say "but what I can I do?" When I mention something meaningful you can do immediately, people say (as the replies here show) "but what's the point, in the face of the huge systemic issues?"
There are, it seems, plenty of people who want to be helpless.

Burnham urgently needs to engage on this. Retaining Mahmood as Home Secretary is a disastrous start. Let's hope he sees sense. Nothing is safe from the billionaire assault on humanity. None of our rights, however ancient & familiar, are impregnable. Fight for them now or lose them, perhaps for ever.

The globalisation of this attack on our fundamental rights is a key conservative aim. As capital operates everywhere, so should its ability to crush our objections. The many vicious anti-protest laws in the UK are an outcome of sustained lobbying by junktanks, the media and other governments.

For years, Telegraph columnists told us climate breakdown is a hoax. Now they say: it's real, but it's too late to do anything about it, so let the bodies pile high (again).
Just one long list of excuses not to reduce fossil fuel use.
Such newspapers bear as much responsibility as the oil firms.

The UK government ceasing automatically to support almost anything the government of Israel does is a major shift. The next step should be to rescind the ban on #PalestineAction, to stop treating protesters as terrorists, and to acknowledge that those seeking to disrupt a genocide may have a point.
