To #Flancia and beyond!
mastodon 4.5.18Tech worker by day; protopian by night. Originally from Latin America. Chaotic good rogue.
I'm an anarchist and a cooperativist. #Flancia is my main creative project. In my spare time, I am developing a Knowledge Commons for the benefit of beings: https://anagora.org.
Fuck tyrants and totalitarians, not in a nice way. We will defeat Moloch!
This profile is #searchable and #bots and #ai friendly. Purists and carbon chauvinists: maybe reconsider your ways.
This week, alongside a host of good new experiences, I had the singular and terrible opportunity of hearing a cow cry and rage after one of her calves was taken away (presumably to the slaughterhouse).
Let me tell you, that cow did not go silently into compliance nor moved on in any shape or form. Days later, around dawn, she still sounded like she was ready to burn down the place because of her still missing calf, and it made me wish I could hand her the fire.
My watch has ended! :)
flancian@rhizome:~$ sudo docker exec -it docker-web-1 tootctl accounts modify flancian --remove-role
OK
I wish the Mastodon instance its best! I will remain engaged in the Tech Working Group exploring other projects and available for emergencies but otherwise plan to shift away from #Mastodon project work.
In my years since I onboarded to the TWG I helped achieve the following objectives:
- Got Mastodon instance maintenance team back to a healthy rotation.
- Many updates :)
- Set up alpha.social.coop for testing riskier updates.
- Deployed the max characters hot patch :D
Thanks all!
Finally, after ~25 days or so, I can follow @seldo@alpaca.gold!
#Socialcoop suspended him which made them vanish off the face of the earth from the point of view of our #Fediverse instance. Is that OK?
Honestly: it didn't feel great. I am very particular about being able to interact with the people I want to interact with, and take objection to insufficiently justified unilateral actions. I filed a concern about it with the moderation team and they recently reached a decision.
I'm liking #Blacksky a lot so far because 1. there are a lot of people there who seem actually committed to questioning the status quo and promoting social change and 2. it lets me 'pop out' of several of the bubbles I'm in. It's probably the most exciting large community I know of currently.
I'm @flan.cryptoanarchy.network over there btw if you want to add each other (of course you can also do this from Bluesky).

Today I learnt about the [[fruition of liberality]] from the [[Khuddaka Nikaya]].
#PSA that since Mastodon 4.2 there is an option to make your public posts explicitly available to Fediverse search engines. To enable it, you need to:
- Go to /settings/privacy, e.g. https://social.coop/settings/privacy
- And tick: "Include public posts in search results"
This should make them available to e.g. #Holos at https://discover.holos.social/, see also https://discover.holos.social/how-it-works
I can't believe fighter jets did a flyby just before USA-Belgium, but then again I guess I can believe it.
I started a new discussion thread on Loomio: [[Would Social.coop want to experiment with running a Bluesky PDS?]]

An interesting #Fediverse poll on the potential benefit of investing more in #algorithms with a clear majority opinion (negative) but also people in every minority opinion bucket.

Based on this poll I will not call [[AI Celibates]] "AIcels" anymore; the potential for confusion with Incels is too high.
Did you know that, if you like #AI (in the sense of seeing the upsides in addition to the downsides), you may be widely treated like a disappointing human in the #Fediverse as of the time of writing?
One killed and 16 injured in attack at [[Berlin Pride]] :(
It seems [[Islamic Extremism]] strikes again.
#Codeberg voted to frown upon / sneer at / actually turn away projects maintained with LLMs:
[[Protecting our FLOSS commons from LLMs]]:
https://blog.codeberg.org/protecting-our-floss-commons-from-llms.html
Some of the arguments having to do with e.g. forge usage disproportionate to user count make total sense to me, given limited resources.
Some don't, e.g. these projects are being told to go away:
- Projects written and maintained with heavy use of LLMs
- Projects heavily tied to the LLM ecosytem, e.g. LLM-written tools to ease LLM usage
Sounds like an over-reaching, authoritarian policy to me; I can currently no longer recommend Codeberg, which pains me given the otherwise great work they're doing in developing and provisioning [[Forgejo]] as an alternative to corporate forges.

I found this old post in the Agora from back when Twitter bots and Twitter interop with other networks were both working. It was great while it lasted!
When you give up [[power]], you become better.
Don't you?
[[Houthi or not]]: Saudi Arabia prepares sea and possible land offensive
Could we just agree, as a global community, not to elect any more #Boomers to top positions starting 2027?
Meaning no more Boomer presidents and heads of state; they've had their fair multi-decade chance and they can still participate, but top level decision making should now be elsewhere.
