Progenitor of the Weird Knife Wednesday feature column. Is “column” the right word?

I make knives now, too. Why not buy one at flightlessforge.com?

I imagine many of them have vision so deteriorated that they literally can’t see the difference. And I will remind you, these people are still allowed to drive. This is especially absurd in the context of it already being a restaurant. “How are we going to get pictures for the menu, boss?” Gee, I dunno. Maybe just make the meal in question and take a fucking picture of it? You are running a restaurant, so I have to charitably assume that somebody there is capable of cooking whatever it is, and plating it up, and sticking it on the cleanest table in the joint for a couple of seconds. For being printed at 72 DPI and the size of a postage stamp anyway, using your cell phone to take the picture will be just fine.

Again. Anyone remember Shoutcast? Anyway, the old versions of Winamp work just fine for playing your local library.

RIP to the Microsoft support forums, then. Although if these get tanked in the search results that will probably be a small net benefit for society given that not a single problem has ever been successfully solved by the Microsoft support forums in the entire history of computing.

An old joke, possibly originating from somewhere in the basement of a DuPont facility: How can you tell a chemist apart from an engineer? ... The chemist washes his hands *before* he takes a leak.

Nearly 30%, for the scheme we have access to at my work. 28.99%. That exact number may in fact inform veterans of the industry of exactly who we use for financing.

I suspect that’s because that is your cluster size, so the smallest “size on disk” value this file could be is 4kB. In reality in the .png format it got served up to me in, it’s 3.45 kB. Converting it to a four color paletted .gif (!) I managed to squeeze it down to 2,461 bytes, though.

The WTF here is not necessarily that some component on the circuit board failed, but that the manufacturer charges $400-$1000 for it with a straight face and gets away with it when they undoubtedly have that board made in China for about $4 per unit.

Because some of the TVs themselves whinge at *you* constantly if you don't connect them to a network now.

There are relatively few, but there are a couple. The Sceptre U515CV-UMC is probably the most well known one. It's easy to find a dumb TV in the sub 24" category, too, but that's probably not what most people are looking for and at that rate most nerds would probably just use a computer monitor instead anyway. No DisplayPort on that Sceptre, obviously.

There is a small percentage surcharge imposed by whoever is providing the financing, but it's basically the same amount as what the credit card companies charge per transaction, on the order of 1-2%, so from the store's perspective it's the same either way. It's not quite correct to say that customers who are not financing hot dogs are paying for others who are, but all of the customers financing hot dogs are indeed paying for each other. On the topic of credit cards, by the way, in some states it is legal for the merchant to pass the processing costs on to the customer and in some cases the shyster bastards actually do it. To my knowledge most or all of the banks providing in store financing or buy-now-pay-later schemes in fact prohibit that practice, so there is at least that.

The loser or one of his friends probably tattled. Most schools have policies similar to this, ostensibly to "prevent it from being brought to school" but in reality because school administrators wish they could exert control over kids' lives 100% of the time but can't, and they're salty about it.

Correct. They only care about this stuff because they don't want anyone to use it on *them.* If you don't believe me, just note how basically every single weapons ban written in the US magically has an exception for law enforcement carved into it. So... We (not me, but all you Californian people) can't have, say, a butterfly knife but for some reason the cops can? What do they need it for that we don't, exactly?

?

In the Enterprise editions of Windows, you can already uninstall it. Maybe not via group policy, but you can just find it in the Apps > Installed Apps list and right click to uninstall it. On the various home user editions of Windows, this is probably not the case. (I have zero systems running those, so I can't check.)

The Enterprise LTSC IoT version of Windows 10 doesn't even come with Copilot, nor have any updates for it thus far installed it on any of the systems I administer, either. Apparently only 11 does.

What's new here is apparently being able to trigger this via group policy, but for anyone in the here and now you can already disable Copilot via group policy as well, even on your local system, even on Windows 11.

Microtransaction-laden cell phone games very infamously oozed in and ate that entire market's lunch. It turns out for short duration video game adjacent distraction on the go, people would much rather use the device they already have with a "free" (only up front) option rather than pay for a Gameboy/DS/PSP and games to go with it. Square discovered this the hard way when they tried to release their various Final Fantasy remakes on smartphones in the early days as if they were regular games, i.e. pay $4.99 or whatever and have access to it in theoretical perpetuity and to the nearest decimal point, no one bought any of them. It turns out consumers respond much more positively to downloading a game for "free" and then coughing up several times more in microtransactions over time than buying any given title outright would cost, and/or being incessantly bombarded with ads as they play. Obviously the industry has figured this out and now *everything* you can play on your cell phone is feemium pay-to-win microtransaction hell built around slot machine mechanics, but it doesn't matter because it apparently prints money.

Turn something this into a moderately off road capable adventure bike and I'm sold. The BMW and KTM guys will absolutely pay $20,000 for it, albeit maybe not $37,000. My KLR has about 200 *miles* of range per fill, if you're even the slightest bit careful with it, which is necessary for excursions out into the bush where there are neither gas stations nor charging points.

Flashing is a misfire event detected. Your engine may have managed to cough out whatever was causing that cylinder not to fire. A blockage in the fuel injector most likely, at least if it managed to cure itself.

I finally gave in and installed Waterfox on my own machine today. I hate to admit it, but having used it for my regular workflow (i.e. actually at work) for the last few hours so far it seems like what base Firefox should be. And arguably still was up until two or three years ago, although I suppose minus the Pocket integration BS that they were doing at that time. The trouble with all of these forks is that they outright rely on regular Firefox to continue to exist upstream, and if Mozilla tanks and takes down Firefox as a whole all of the forks will by association go with it. I didn’t want to actually abandon Mozilla’s version because their user numbers seem to be tenuous enough as it is. But at this rate I think I’m going to switch our office over to Waterfox in the next couple of days regardless.

The origin of the Mormon religion is practically a parody of itself. It’s also a sterling example of why education is so important in developing people’s critical thinking skills so they aren’t all credulous morons.
