Hey #believeinfilm friends, I published a short photo essay where I talk about the experimental nature of film photography, why I like to push the boundaries in that medium, and what doing so has led to: "The Risks and Rewards of Experimental Photography" https://www.analog.cafe/r/the-risks-and-rewards-of-experimental-photography-7vi3 #filmphotography #analogphotography #essay #experimental #photography

Hey #believeinfilm friends,

A small British camera maker, Alfie, will soon launch a box camera, BOXX, with a Pocket Darkroom holders for developing *paper positives* on the spot:

https://www.analog.cafe/comments/thsr

The camera comes with a 100mm Wollaston (F8–F32), a 55mm Steinheil Periscopic (F16), and a 65mm pinhole lens.

Reminds me of the Afghan Box Camera project - just smaller!

Hey #believeinfilm friends,

Today's guide is about bleach bypass:

https://www.analog.cafe/r/bleach-bypass-og1d

A common technique for motion picture studios (think Fight Club, Minority Report, Se7en), but less so for still photographers.

In this article, I go into detail about how the process works, how to select your light, exposure, and scenes, how to scan, and how to develop if you have a Blix kit.

Happy shooting!

Bleach Bypass: A Guide for Film Photographers

Bleach bypass is a relatively simple film development technique that creates rich blacks, low saturation, and increased contrast. In this article, I’ll share techniques, samples, and recipes for better bleach-bypass results on film. You will need to know how to develop colour-negative film at home  (it’s not that hard!) and have a development kit with separate bleach and fix (no blix) or an extra black-and-white fixer.

Hey #believeinfilm friends,

I've rewritten the Kodak Ektar film review:

https://www.analog.cafe/r/kodak-ektar-100-film-review-59np

I’ve been shooting it for nearly a decade. The emulsion remains the same, but the box design and my skills have changed. I’ve added more photos, better insights, and more sources.

Have you shot this film? What do you think?

Kodak Ektar 100 Film Review: “World’s Finest Grain”

Kodak Ektar 100 boasts the world’s finest grain for an ISO 100 colour-negative film, strong contrast, and outstanding saturation in every frame. Available in 135, 120, and sheet formats, this film has undergone numerous redesigns and distribution changes over the years — which I’ll cover in this review — while it remains one of the best-recognized names among analogue photographers and a powerful, though sometimes difficult to manage, tool for creating impactful images.

Hey #believeinfilm friends,

Big news! Optik Oldschool releases the German-made OptiColour 200 in 4x5 sheets:

https://www.analog.cafe/comments/jxnz

This is the first completely new large format colour-negative film product since 2010 and the first for this German film manufacturer.

It's also the cheapest fresh colour-negative film you can get in sheet form today.

I don't shoot LF, but this is making me wanna get a camera just to try this film. Will you try it?

Hey #believeinfilm friends,

It's been a week for large format film releases! Kodak, Ilford, and Optik Oldschool (via ORWO) have made announcements about new and reworked products:

Kodak is folding its films (including bulk rolls) under its own distribution, Ilford made Pan F huge (finally), and Optik Oldschool is selling the world's first truly new colour-negative sheet film since 2010.

Love it.

I've imported and reviewed the fantastic made-in-Japan Fujifilm Superia Premium 400 film:

For most folks, Fujifilm had stopped making colour-negative film years ago — yet the Japan-only retailers still sell fresh rolls today.

Hey #believeinfilm friends,

In today's guide, John Jones explains the F-Stop darkroom printing workflow:

https://www.analog.cafe/r/f-stop-printing-the-complete-darkroom-workflow-aujf

Unlike timed intervals, the F-Stop method relies on the same math we use on our cameras and offers a much easier way to see the best option in your test strips.

F-stop printing applies the same logarithmic exposure logic you already use when you shoot, baked into every shutter speed scale and aperture ring you’ve ever touched, to the one place in the photographic process where it was always missing: the enlarger. This guide will walk you through exactly how to do it, from reading your negative to dialling in a final time to dodging and burning with precision you probably didn't think was possible. If you’ve been printing with linear timing, you can star

The UK film factory’s latest product is a mod of their Phoenix colour film emulsions, designed to produce a stark orange- and blue-forward false-colour palette. I’ve already shared some samples of this film following a product leak¹ (review coming soon), so instead of talking about the aesthetics, today I’d like to focus on the significance of a large-scale production of an experimental colour imaging material by… #editorial

Hey #believeinfilm friends,

I just bought a few rolls of the new Harman Switch Azure and compared it directly to Lomochrome Turquoise:

https://www.analog.cafe/r/harman-switch-azure-vs-lomochrome-turquoise-i0vp

Despite doing roughly the same thing, these films look wildly different — one is much crazier than the other.

This comparison tests those emulsions with various exposure settings in "normal" and modified (bluescaled) shooting configurations.

Can you tell which is which?

Adam Savage (Mythbusters) explores IMAX film projection.

The medium (120/220) format is revered for its immense resolution. On film, switching from full-frame (35mm) can dramatically reduce grain and add significant detail that smaller frames can not resolve. This format had been the portrait and editorial photographers’ choice for print, as it could be enlarged and printed bigger. Now imagine a 600-pound roll of medium format film that runs through an entire building… #editorial

I found a video and recipes for Lippmann prints — the only true colour photographic process.
