Last weekend I was at the Pacific Science Center to listen to a friend do a set during Modular on the Spot, an event by the Modular Seattle community.  And, since the performances were happening at sunset I was able to catch the Pacific Science Center arches during blue hour.

(Cross-posted from my site, where there are more photos to see: https://andrewflenniken.com/2026/09/17/september-17th-2026-blue-hour-silver-arches/)

With the light changing rapidly, I moved around shooting from different angles, looking for more abstract compositions.  I'm pretty happy with the results.  😃

This past weekend the Cougar Mountain Zoo's three lion cubs celebrated their first birthday, and I swung by to get some photos of the occasion.

(Cross-posted from my site, where there are more cub photos to see: https://andrewflenniken.com/2026/09/01/september-1st-2026-a-three-of-cubs/)

I missed the whip-cream smeared windows in their tunnel, but caught the sugar crash afterwards when they were plopped out on a platform together.  I did manage to be present later for their "birthday cakes": a frozen disc of blood sandwiched between two discs of frozen goat cheese.  They seemed to enjoy those a lot, unsurprisingly.  :D

The equinox has passed and we're now into Autumn, with shorter days ahead.

Got to catch those rays where and how you can.

While the lion cubs were the stars of the show two weekends ago, Cougar Mountain Zoo‘s namesakes were also out and and being very photogenic that day, with a classic mlem.

Not to be outdone, one of the wolves also got in on the action.

"Every new beginning is some other beginning's end" Words I've been thinking about recently, from the song "Closing Time" by Semisonic.  I've wanted to incorporate them into a tattoo for a while, but I'm not sure when I'll be able to make that happen. The view from Sunset Hill Park lends itself to untraditional photo widths, with the line of Olympics marching across the frame.  I was inspired to do just that with these images. Spooky season is right around the corner, and that was on my mind when I took this photo last night.  Folks like their skulls and bats, but my favorite kind of spooky is bleak and full of dread.  This scene has that so, for World Photography Day, that's what you're getting.

I am, at heart, a Goth.  ;)

I recently took a walk through Seattle's Volunteer Park in the late afternoon, and their Dahlia Garden was a riot of brilliant blooms.

(Cross-posted from my site, where there are additional photos to see: https://andrewflenniken.com/2026/08/24/august-24th-2026-red-dahlia-summer/)

There were many different varieties, in so many shapes and colors it was hard to believe they were all the same type of flower.  Whenever I see dahlias though I always think of my cousin, who loves the red ones, so this post is for her.  😊

Photography while the sun is low is frequently rewarding.  I get my beloved backlit leaves, but I also often get glowing, neon edges.

These were taken on a late afternoon walk through the Bellevue Botanical Garden a couple of weeks ago.  I had the macro lens on, looking mostly for "small", but just because it *can* shoot small doesn't mean that's all it can be used for.  :D

Juanita Bay Park is a pretty place with lots of nature to see, but during a late afternoon walk there the thing that kept drawing my eye was man-made. (Cross-posted from my site, where there are more photos to enjoy: https://andrewflenniken.com/2026/07/21/july-21st-2026-afternoon-wood/) The warm sunlight on the brown wood, and the texture of its weathered surface, brought me some joy. I even found a backlit leaf to include, so you know I did.  ;) Gear: Nikon Z 7II, Nikon Z 40mm f2 #Photography #FineArtPhotography #Nikon #NikonCreators

Strong side lighting, and a fence to create shadows for contrast?  Yes, please. (Cross-posted from my site, where there are more photos to see: https://andrewflenniken.com/2026/07/24/july-24th-2026-fridays-fence-post/) Add some glowing spiderwebs (and a backlit spider, for good measure)?  That's a happy place, for sure. July 1st means it’s once again Canada Day!

(Cross-posted from my site, where there's a 'making of' photo: https://andrewflenniken.com/2026/07/01/july-1st-2026-canada-day/)

I don’t have any sugar maples near where I live now, in the Seattle area, but there’s a silver maple in the park down the street. I gathered a leaf yesterday, threw together a very DIY light table, and here we are.

For my Canadian family and friends, have a wonderful day! I hope your celebrations are joyful. For everyone else… maybe eat something maple flavored? Drink a Canadian beer? Tell someone you’re sorry? 😉

Did you hear about the rose that grew from a crack in the concrete? Proving nature’s law is wrong it learned to walk without having feet. Funny it seems, but by keeping its dreams, it learned to breathe fresh air. Long live the rose that grew from concrete when no one else ever cared. -Tupac Shakur (Cross-posted from my site, where there's another photo to see: https://andrewflenniken.com/2026/07/15/july-15th-2026-grow-in-the-space-you-have/) #Photography #Poetry #Nikon #NikonCreators

Last week I went hiking somewhere I'd never been before: Green River Gorge.

It's a wonderful spot; bookended by state parks, but the friend I went with suggested hitting a couple of spots in the middle, so that's what we did.  The trails down to the river were pretty steep in parts (what with, you know, it being a gorge and all), but the scenery was well worth the effort, even on a hot summer day.  I'd never seen so many salmonberries in one place before!  There are fewer now, though: many were perfectly ripe and I assure you they got eaten.

Also got to see a new-to-me bird, the Violet-green Swallow.  There were quite a few of them along one stretch of the river, darting along just above the surface.  They were moving so fast it was a challenge to get a good shot, but I did manage a few.  :)

(Cross-posted from my site, where there are more photos to see: https://andrewflenniken.com/2026/05/25/may-25th-2025-memorial-day/)

Today is Memorial Day in the US, the unofficial first day of summer and a day off from work for lots of folks.

I'll admit, summer is my least favorite season.  I'm definitely more of an autumn guy!  That said, I live somewhere I can tolerate (and even enjoy) Summer, and I'll happily get my vitamin D via the sun for a few months rather than supplementing.

Late spring and early summer also means cottonwood seeds everywhere, like little snowdrifts, and my favorite flower, the California Poppy, is popping up everywhere.

So there's lots to smile about, I think, which we all need.  Now probably more than most years.  What are you looking forward to, and what's bringing a smile to your face?

Walking along the beach at sunset recently and felt a *thunk* as my toe encountered something heavy in the sand.  "That didn't feel like a rock," I thought, before I even looked down.  At first glance it looked like something gnarled and wooden, but the shape was... odd.  Bending down to retrieve it I realized it was an old eye bolt, corroded by time, sea, and salt.

I immediately know what to do with it.

(Cross-posted from my site, where there's another photo from that day's wanderings: https://andrewflenniken.com/2026/06/05/june-5th-2026-world-environment-day/)

I shoot a lot of nature & wildlife, and always have. While I tend to generate more income from portraiture and show work, nature photography today still serves the same purpose in my life it always has: getting me outside, filling my life with beauty, and giving me peace. It's everywhere you look, even in a city.

While wandering around town recently, before meeting a friend for trivia, I passed a vacant lot between buildings. It was a riot of colorful wildflowers (including my beloved California Poppies) and tall green grass; a pocket of nature in an otherwise urban setting. Unplanned and unplanted, I'm sure, just a spot left to its own devices and what grew, grew. It initially felt somewhat sad that it was fenced off, since you couldn't get in to walk among the blooms, but upon reflection that's probably why they could grow at all. A lesson in the importance of good boundaries, maybe, and giving things the space they need to grow.

Given the holiday in the US, it seems like a good time to post a couple of Bald Eagle photos. (Cross-posted from my site, where there's another photo to see: https://andrewflenniken.com/2026/07/04/july-4th-2026-independence-day/) For related reasons, this morning I also re-read the poem "The New Colossus" by Emma Lazarus, written as part of the fundraising for the construction of the Statue of Liberty, and viewable on a plaque in the Statue's pedestal.  "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free" is the most famous part, but the whole thing is good: Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame. "Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" #Photography #IndependenceDay #BaldEagle
