They will never become profitable. If you look at OpenAI as a single, independent, private company then they appear unprofitable. But when you look at them as a means of laundering Pentagon money and other federal contracts into straw purchases for NVIDIA and Oracle, they are immensely profitable. AI is a Loss Leader. It props up the production and sale of hardware, which has been enormously profitable for its partners, its investors, and the economy as a whole.

It’s baffling to me that he is in an interracial marriage and is… Fine? Usha Vance is a very pale skinned, high caste (Brahmin), wealthy migrant who was set up with JD Vance by Yale Law kingmaker Amy Chua. This was a political marriage in the feudal sense. Vance is married in order to secure a social tie to Indian power brokers, as part of a generations-long effort by American elites to encircle Asia and control their domestic politics. Same reason why Mitch McConnell married Tiawanese shipping magnet Elaine Chao.

I mean, you joke. But Germany pivoted out of the Great Depression far faster than its European peers precisely because they weren’t afraid to print a bunch of money and pay people to do things. The Fascists inherited one of the only growing economies in Europe by the time they took power in 1932. And when they assumed office, the brought investment from the Americans overseas (who were having their own fascist turn), because they were willing to purge or enslave local populations, tear down neighborhoods, and build up whatever capital Standard Oil, IBM, and Ford Motor Company asked of them. On the opposite side of the Atlantic and on the other side of the Urals, progressive liberals and Soviet communists were trying out a leftist mirror of this strategy. They were using the levers of the state to mobilize the masses of unemployed labor into productive capital improvements for the benefit of the public at-large. So the US, Germany, Japan, and the USSR all rapidly emerged out of the '29 crash into a booming 1930s economy. Meanwhile, England and France and much of Latin America and North Africa languished under artificial constraints of state-capitalism.

I mean, we’ll jump to 1930s on reflex. But this is a pattern that’s repeated itself internationally, from Apartheid South Africa to the juntas in the Pacific Rim to Fascists in Argentina and Chile. Economy shits itself. Social Democrats come in to deliver milquetoast reforms. The economy recovers somewhat, but never enough to actually relieve the social pressures of the moment. And then the democratic system starts vomiting up radical candidates of all stripes, while bourgeois capital attempts to ride the tiger into the next full recovery and/or national emergency. The wheel doesn’t always land on Fascism. But it’s definitely a possibility.

Most of the money getting funneled to Nvidia came from them in the first place. NVIDIA’s not getting most of its money from OpenAI. OpenAI doesn’t really buy anything from NVIDIA. They buy rack space from Oracle, which then builds out new datacenters with NVIDIA chipsets. And Oracle’s primary revenue stream is from its business Cloud Services, of which OpenAI is a small fraction.

USA is learning this in Iran, but they are on the other side of the world so they can take the L and move on. Idk if the US gets to walk away from this. How many military bases in the region are still standing? What’s the timeline for replacing all those lost F-15s and C-130s? We’re not seeing a war in downtown Cincinnati. But the US empire is going to be fundamentally changed from it’s “Push Libya’s shit in because we can” Obama Era recent past.

Morsi won office in a popular election, lasted barely two years, and then was couped and imprisoned. I wouldn’t call that interm period a dictatorship, if for no other reason than it stood in stark contrast to the periods immediately before and after. There was no well-defined national leader. Bureaucrats were still shuffling around and rebuilding a power base, before settling on el-Sisi.

The older generation ceded our power to the wealthy. Did they actually? Or are you just saying that? it was their own short sighted greed and often bigotry that allowed them to go along with it Did we take any kind of vote on our actual energy policy? Did we collectively decide to build highways over railways or big trucks over dense housing blocks at some point? Who decided to tear up the streetcars? The Americans who believe their democracy is real are as bad as the ones who believe climate change is fake.

White Americans do have class consciousness. They absolutely do not. And the problem is in the construction. “White” isn’t a material condition, it’s a club that certain ethnic cohorts are invited into or expelled from at the demand of the Bourgeois Class. Look at the Hispanic cohort and how they were ushered in during the Reagan/Clinton/Bush Era, then violently jettisoned under Obama/Trump/Biden/Trump. But those shakeups are exactly what allow revolution to happen. When you have a sudden massive displacement of middle-class people and a shift in economic conditions, the social conditions for a mass movement can roll through a country like a landslide. The reason that there won’t ever be a leftist revolution in the US is that white Americans are not part of the proletariat class I mean, Marxists have been misplacing the sight of the Next Big Revolution pretty much since the first newsletter. I don’t think it’s safe to just write off any country or region or conglomeration of people, because the material forces that produce a revolutionary consciousness are fickle and temporal. Nobody was looking at Cuba in the 1950s and saying “This place will be a Soviet satellite in another ten years, no problem”. Nobody was looking at South Africa under Apartheid and predicting a full dismantling of the colonial state inside the end of the 20th century. Nobody was thinking “the next mayor of New York will definitely be a Muslim from Astoria nominated by the DSA” a year ago. You can’t be prescient. All you can do is be ready.

Claiming europeans and americans do not have a massive appetite for war is just ridiculous. Neither have a draft. Neither have a majority population that actually supports these overseas conflicts. These aren’t popular conflicts by any measure. That hasn’t always been the case. Americans were gungho about invading Afghanistan after 9/11. And Iraq had majority support in its opening months. But Libya? Syria? Iran? None of these ever did. They provoked popular backlash the day the first shots were fired. Thats why I talk about orientalism and calipers. The Russian media having done a better job of manufacturing consent has nothing to do with their skull size. Again, this is the sort of thing Americans used to be good at. Now they blaze ahead without the pretext of public consent, because the US democratic system has become morbund. Russian state actors do appear significantly more concerned with “winning hearts and minds” than their Western peers. They invest more in propaganda and social controls. It also helps that this is a border war and not some conflict happening on the other end of the planet. Russians don’t need to read about Ukrainian attacks on Russian soil in the media, they can see it in their own backyards. This isn’t twenty years of “Ukraine is just six months away from an Atom Bomb” Thomas Friedman scare stories. This direct conflict amps up the nationalist urgency, in the same way US attacks into Iran and Yemen ignited a firestorm of militarism fueled by newfound nationalist sentiment. Its pretty clear there’s a good amount of othering going on here, as well as just pure old-fashioned nationalism. The Russian government and the US government are not mirrors of one another.

Ditching Google is good, but not for AI. LLMs and their precursors were always how search engines compiled and ranked their search results. Google has been using some form of AI to build up its base of information for decades. The absurd turn of the last decade was Google C-level pivot from engagement through useful results to engagement through bad results that force you to click around on the site longer. “How do we get more ad interaction?” became the question that dominated the development of their technology. That’s what enahittified their website. Not “AI”.

Voting can definitely bring change. Look at Zohran Mamdani in NYC. Zohran is a nice change of pace, but we’re way to early in his administration to know whether he’ll bring concrete social change to the city. New York has had decent mayors before. And they’ve left their footprints. But they’ve also had plenty of corrupt shitheads and racist asshats who climb into Gracie Mansion right on the heels of their betters. But if you’re not satisfied with voting alone then you can get more involved with politics. The fundamental problem with electoralism - and this is a critique that easily goes back to the first Obama campaign - is that election day often disperses the force that the campaign had originally assembled. What’s notable about Zohran (and a lot of the DSA affiliates) is that they come into office and maintain or expand the organizations that put them there. Compare that to say, the Beto Campaign in Texas or the Fetterman Campaign in Pennsylvania or Polis in Colorado. Win or Lose, they disintegrate within a few weeks of the votes being counted. Often, they produce legacy candidates that act in direct opposition to the people who put them there. And that sows distrust in the movements that produced them. So I might argue that you get involved in an organization you like first. And then you make decisions within that organization collectively. And sometimes that means supporting a candidate. Sometimes that means recognizing there’s nobody worth voting for in a given race and agreeing - collectively - that you’re not going to support anyone. But the root of the organization is in the organization, not in the voting. Just going out and slapping buttons and saying “Okay what’s next?” is a sucker’s gambit.

But it reminds me of people refusing to vote for Kamala Harris because her Israel policy wasn’t quite perfect She was actively facilitating a genocide. What’s more, nobody got to vote for Kamala Harris in the primary. Biden ran virtually uncontested, then fumbled a debate performance and got shuffled off stage left. Harris was so unpopular in the 2020 primary that she polled 5th place in her home state. People refused to vote for Kamala Harris because she wasn’t doing a good job of running for office. The Pro-Israel shit was merely the tip of the iceberg. And, as a corollary to the Harris mess, consider the current Gavin Newsom campaign. Governor Gavin Newsom used his veto pen over the weekend to ax legislation aimed at protecting providers of gender-affirming care from being extradited to face charges for doing so by another state. If this guy runs for President, what sane liberal supports him? He’s working hand-in-glove with Greg Abbott and Ron DeSantis to fuck over doctors in his own state. If the DNC is going to air-drop him into the Democratic Nomination in 2028, we’re going to get four more years of Trump pretty much guaranteed. You aren’t going to beat Fascism by lining up for Fascism-Lite.

Trump suggests letting Iran 'take out' Los Angeles and San Diego at campaign rally Trump said he wanted to “see a tremendous victory” in the November election, “’cause it verifies all the things we did. And again, remember, with the war it’s just artificial, it’s a little bit high.” “It’s a small price to pay for keeping the world safe, keeping our country safe,” he continued. “They can take out a city, let ’em take out Los Angeles, let ’em take out San Diego. This is a very small price to pay.” The crowd cheered.

More than a 9/11 died from covid in the US every week and nobody gave a shit Lots of people gave a shit. That’s the whole reason we had quarantine for over a year. I don’t think it’s unfair to say that the Russian government’s hard fascist turn in the 90s, and it’s decades of corrosive white nationalist domestic politics, has fucked with the heads of many of it’s residents in a way the squishy libs in Europe and the US aren’t able to conceptualize. That’s not a “calipers” situation. It’s the end result of Shock Doctrine economics and attendant toxic culture war politics. And it’s not contained to Russia by any means. You see this shit across Eastern Europe and the Middle East. As common in Riyadh and Cairo as Moscow and St. Petersburg. But it does help to answer the question “Why do Russians seem to have an appetite for endless war that Euros/Americans lack?”

I gotta say, this has not been my experience. “I’m putting this in a safe spot” means there’s a coinflip’s chance it’s in one of the standard spots and we can find it again. It’s when they don’t make a conscious and deliberate effort to put something away that it gets ethered. Can’t count the number of times my partner has lost her cell phone, her keys, her purse, her wallet, her shoes, her bicycle, her car… because she was just going through life doing her thing. Under a blanket. In a cabinet. In the refrigerator. In the trash. I was apoplectic when she took the bus home from work, having not bothered to clock that she’d driven there. “Wait, why is there only one car in the garage?” “Oh, haha! I knew I was forgetting something. I’ll call an Uber.” mega-sigh
