It’s Yuri On Ice 10th Anniversary this week, so of course I’m celebrating in my own quiet way, mostly by re-reading my favorite canon-verse fics, though plan to try to watch some anime tonight.

Anyway, just had a thought. I’ve seen a few fics over the years where Yurio wins Onsen on Jce and Victor goes to become his coach & is separated from Yuuri and everyone is sad until they finally get reunited by skating somehow. But! What if Yurio wins onsen on ice, and Victor goes back to Russia, and invites Yuuri to go back with him and coach both Yuuris in Russia? I haven’t seen that and I feel like it has so much potential for “interpersonal everyone learning to live together and get along” conflict. Especially if the author leans into Yurio’s crush on Yuuri as a point of conflict, and especially if they’re all skating at the the Ice Palace where Yakov has to WATCH Victor being a coach and losing clumps of hair by the second. Get Lilia to still come coach the Yuuris in ballet, which becomes another point of comparison for Yurio to get up in his Feelings about. I just think it could be a really amazing fic from the right author.

No *I’m* not gonna write it, don’t be silly, do you know how many unfinished long-fics I have languishing on my AO3??? This idea deserves better than going into the fic graveyard that is my AO3.

The worst part of re-reading fics for me is that sometimes I have a fic I really love but the writer was clearly a bit new at first and so the writing at the beginning is a bit wonky, but they clearly steadily improve as they move through the chapters. The Problem, is I always forget the early chapters are a little wonky every time I re-read and I’m like “Hrm, this isn’t what I remember…oh wait, it’s because I’m at the beginning. Whoops.”

Ok, look, I know nothing about mandarin as a language except the few xianxia words I’ve picked up from reading webnovels. But I do know languages, and I know the way they…drift over long periods of time. So, all the Luo Binghe fics where he comes to modern Beijing, or hell canon with our transmigrators, I’m assuming there’s potentially a thousand years of linguistic drift between Binghe and Shen Yuan. How is it they always understand each other perfectly, just Binghe speaking with archaic phrasing? I know the traditional characters haven’t changed much. But have the sounds of Mandarin really not changed that much in so long? Would it even be Mandarin 1000 years ago or one of the other languages in the Chinese language family?? I know im thinking about this too much, suspension of disbelief yada yada. But this is what I do with fantasy type stories. I enjoy them for a while, then I start going “hey wait, how would this actually work in real life??”

Anyway, I need an AU where SY transmigrates and can barely understand what anyone is saying and even doing his best everyone thinks he’s got brain damage because suddenly his pronunciation is DEEPLY weird and he uses nonsense words that don’t exist (yet..). I just think the potential for miscommunication and hijinks is high! (SQH wouldn’t have the same problem because he transmigrates into a baby, so he gets taught the language as a baby as any baby would learn. But SQQ is a full on adult who is already supposed to know how to speak. MQF probably diagnoses him with a stroke or something and YQY personally undertakes to re-teach his precious Xiao Jiu how to speak after his terrible affliction.) I’m just thinking, imagine you’re a common millenial, and you suddenly get transmigrated into Beowulf. You’re only gonna grasp like every third word because the language has changed so much.

Unless, it works because PIDW is fake Ancient China, so everyone speaks modern Mandarin. And highly educated Shen Yuan gets transmigrated and spends the next 20 years raging at Airplane “THEY WOULD NOT SAY THAT YOU HACK AUTHOR!!” I think both explanations could be extremely fucking funny actually.

If I had a nickel for every disabled sapphic transfemme I’ve met on OkCupid who I’ve ended up loving and who is into horror, has witchy vibes & DID, is into nerdy stuff like gaming and anime, & who I’ve met just before they started medical transition, I’d have 2 nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.

(There’s a lot more stuff they have in common too, and I’ve finally been able to introduce them so they’re finding EVEN MORE stuff they overlap on, but it is actually uncanny how much alike they are, and completely predictable I would love both of them very much. So, I had a bunch of medical-stuff-not-paid-for-by-insurance come out at once this month, with an additional 2-day hotel stay for another medical thing this weekend/week. This all means I am short for my housing payments this month, and also for food for the next week until I get paid again. It’s my birthday and for my birthday I got morning birthday sex, something I’ve never even wanted before T, got to show my cute girlfriend some more Yuki Yuna is a Hero, and am now about to get Indian Food and chocolate cake. 41 isn’t so bad really!! To the youngins’ hang in there, every decade is a little better than the last!

I’ve run across three fics in my bookmarks that have been deleted! 3!! And I’m only 5 pages into my bookmarks from most recent back! And I’m pretty sure these have been deleted recently because I’m pretty sure based on where they are in my bookmarks list that they’re all for ships I reread frequently right now so I would have noticed if they’d been deleted for more than maybe a month. Only one has a note from me and it’s unfortunately not specific enough for me to remember which fic.

I understand sometimes people want t separate themselves from their past fics for various reasons. But I wish more people would just orphan them instead of deleting them. I never know which ones they are and I’m always wondering if the deleted ones are favorites I’ve forgotten about or ones I rarely read. I have some favorites downloaded, but I honestly have too many damn bookmarks to download them all at this point. I’d need to start my own fucking archive just to keep track of them. And I don’t want to do that when AO3 is doing such a stellar job already of doing that for me. And I’m still reading those fics damnit! As a writer I would never delete a fic from the archive, even if I hated it and never wanted to see it again. I know my fics are important to other people and also I’m an archivist at heart so when something is in an archive I’m like “it should be in there forever. For posterity” and shit. Even if it needs to be hidden for a while, or have my name taken off of it. Even my worst fic mistake .

A local trans man of color I’m acquainted with is looking for about $40 to buy a bus ticket out of town to escape his transphobic abusive parents’ house. He’s currently camped in my living room just to avoid being in their house and having them call the cops on him when he asks them to stop being transphobic toward them. He has a place to land, just needs money to get there as it’s across the state. (Any extra he receives will probably be put to use feeding himself and getting stable enough to renew his CNA license and find a position).
