Bringing an on-going discussion from outside into a thread with which it bore no relationship, The correct way to proceed is to alert mods, sysadmins or another participant in the discussion privately. What happened is akin to someone walking into a restaurant and seemingly randomly punching another patron. They’re going to get thrown out. Damn what a completely out of touch response. Many people point out that this was basically a badly handled abuse report that a user brought to a main thread instead of reporting, however that does not and never did justify the original and continued ban of the first person to report on it. I am especially galled by the “and ad hominem attacks on another user (even if it turned out they deserved it).” bit. Dude, maybe someone’s motivations matter. Acting like attacking someone’s motivations are always out of place is part of what lets this kind of shit fester and grow.

The main thing I remember about Tim Cook was him making me realize how wealthy white cisgender gay men were hardly different from wealthy white cisgender straight men. The whole article has always been really worth a read, seeing how a techbro tried to turn a classic magazine into a tech company somehow. Besides that though, these passages always stuck out to me, because it feels deeply like these wealthy men exploit their sexuality to justify avoiding critique of their actions outside of their sexuality. www.newyorker.com/…/inside-collapse-new-republic In 2014, Hughes’s personal life and business life became increasingly intertwined, in ways that would coincide with changes at the magazine. His husband, Sean Eldridge, was running for Congress in a district that spanned the Catskills and the Hudson Valley, but his political campaign was not going the way he had hoped. Eldridge and Hughes had bought a two-million-dollar home in a district in which neither of them had ever lived, and Eldridge began investing in local businesses in what was widely seen as a transparent effort to influence the race. Ioffe dates the abrupt change in mood to late summer, shortly after Foer’s birthday party—the period when, as many current and former T.N.R. employees noted, Eldridge’s expensive campaign to win a congressional seat started looking hopeless. “We all liked him; he seemed to like us,” she told me. “Everything was going great. Then, in the summer, something snapped, and he started talking to me about money and how we’re losing money and he’s tired of it. And then he became just downright contemptuous and hostile toward us.” Hughes’s eroding relationship with the staff took on an ideological edge. On the morning that Tim Cook, the C.E.O. of Apple, announced that he was gay, MacGillis wrote a note to “the Plank,” T.N.R.’s internal e-mail listserv for writers and editors. “I see the celebration of his announcement, while entirely justifiable, as another sign of what’s happened to liberalism today, where rights/identity liberalism trumps economic liberalism,” he wrote. “This is, after all, a guy who embodies so much of what’s amiss in the age of inequality—pulling down $378 million in 2011 alone; Apple skirting taxes more brazenly than anyone else—yet those revelations have caused barely a stir.” Hughes responded to the note six minutes later: “I think those are valid issues, although Apple has acted squarely within the law,” he wrote. “The law itself is fucked up. But I don’t think you can underestimate the difficulty of his decision or how tone deaf that argument would be today.” The other editorial employees on the list were surprised by the response. It was an internal listserv for writers and editors, and the staffers didn’t realize that Hughes, who had relinquished his title as editor-in-chief when he installed Vidra, was on it. MacGillis responded by saying that he would hold off on writing, but added, “Just for the record, though, it is not so clear that Apple acted squarely within the law. The law’s a mess, but Apple pushed the bounds of it more than anyone.” He pasted text from a piece in the Times that questioned some of Apple’s practices.

*laughs in AMD (I know they’re not that much better but they’re so much more well supported in Linux it’s absurd. NVIDIA only started getting more support that was focused on AI, which is cool and all, local AI is all right, but no very useful in everyday context.)

Give you ‘physical’ forever access and doesn’t take up so much space. Some of us figured this out 20 years ago and never turned back. (I figured it out about the time that I realized I had more music in my mp3 collection than the college radio station I volunteered at in 2000.) My Cinemageddon account turned 18 earlier this year.

I'm sorry have you seen any of these people in the past year, in particular Hegseth? The idea that they have "well-trained media faces" is the biggest joke I've heard in 2026. They crumble under even the slightest pushback and have manbaby tantrums. Well-trained media faces, you must be having a laugh mate.

I think this place wasn't too healthy for them mentally, and I'm fairly certain after moving they just bowed out of coming back and focused on rebuilding their life in a new country, or at least I hope they did. Lemmy also skews heavily US American (less so than reddit but still largely) and so maybe they just wanted to disconnect from things here in the USA. If I was in a new place I think I'd spend more time trying to get my bearings locally than reading endless news about the place I just left.

Left hand is what people "remember" right hand is actual reality. Anyone who remembered it as "Looney Toons" and not "Looney Tunes" apparently missed the "Merrie Melodies" as well. I dunno, so many of these I remember them as they actually exist.

Fruit of the Loom with the Cornucopia: Fake
Curious George with a tail: Fake (I know because I had the fucking Curious George huffing ether shirt in college.)
Chic-Fil-A: Fake (Link to Chick-Fil-A's founder S. Truet Cathy's book "Eat Mor Chikin" published in 2002)
Looney Toons: Fake
Fruit Loops: Fake
Oscar Meyer: Fake (I often confused the two spellings as a kid because we often bought Oscar Mayer hot dogs from Fred Meyer.)
Berenstein Bears: Not fake, more of a matter of different publications running with different spellings.
Jiffy: Fake
Febreeze: Fake (link to archived post from 1996 in an ad magazine announcing P&G releasing Febreze)

Okay Maybe I'll come back and finish digging up the evidence for all of these, but literally the Pikachu one is the only one I'm unsure about. I'm positive everything else on the left hand side has been completely debunked or is a situation like the Berenstain Bears where different publishers used different spellings, especially in the home videos.

This is the best solution. If we can no longer count on our "representatives" to represent our needs in governance, we must build our own separate governance from the ground up to help one another. The Black Panthers knew they couldn't trust the racist US government to help the black community, so they organized to help the community themselves. They *mostly* did community support projects, but they *did* have a set of armed members who essentially acted as a local police force since they also definitely couldn't trust the police to protect them.

The PS5 DualSense is definitely the second-best choice if you can't get a Steam controller. It has comparable features, although I personally feel like the touchpads are placed in suboptimal position compared to the Steam controller. It also has comparable build quality, unlike Microsoft's various iterations of Xbox controllers that all have absolutely disastrous build quality.

The way macOS handles it is literally just exactly how Linux handles it. Makes sense considering macOS is certified UNIX and Linux is technically a re-implementation of UNIX. This meme is conflating iOS and macOS as the same thing, which they certainly are not.

This might sound like an off-the-wall suggestion, but waaaaaay back in the day, Trent Reznor was in on the torrent game, he had an account on Oink.UK way way way back. He described it as the best music store in existence. It’s a shot in the dark, but reach out to him, that’s a person who could really help something like this become a reality who has the money and the knowledge of the music legal system to approach it. He also likely has similar ideology, as evidenced by his joy at Oink.UK. Anyway, perhaps the kind of famous person who could help this project really get off the ground. www.wired.com/2007/10/trent-reznor-on/ ** I’ll admit I had an account there and frequented it quiteoften. At the end of the day, what made OiNK a great place was that itwas like the world’s greatest record store. Pretty much anything youcould ever imagine, it was there, and it was there in the format youwanted. If OiNK cost anything, I would certainly have paid, but thereisn’t the equivalent of that in the retail space right now. iTunes kindof feels like Sam Goody to me. I don’t feel cool when I go there. I’mtired of seeing John Mayer’s face pop up. I feel like I’m being hustledwhen I visit there, and I don’t think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc. Amazon has potential, but none of them get aroundthe issue of pre-release leaks. And that’s what’s such a difficultpuzzle at the moment. If your favorite band in the world has a leakedrecord out, do you listen to it or do you not listen to it? People onthose boards, they’re grateful for the person that uploaded it — they’re the hero. They’re not stealing it because they’re going to makemoney off of it; they’re stealing it because they love the band. I’mnot saying that I think OiNK is morally correct, but I do know that itexisted because it filled a void of what people want.
WIRED

Trent Reznor: OiNK Was Better Than ITunes

Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor recently bailed on his record label and said he plans to go the Radiohead route for his next album, releasing it digitally without label involvement. It turns out that Reznor is also a big fan of the OiNK private BitTorrent tracker, which — until it was shut down by the \[…\]

Possibly, but I tend to think that only happened on reddit due to corporate influence and trying to use that as a way to take a stand against a corporation. I think the same is unlikely to happen on smaller sites, more likely the whole site could be gone. Anyway, counterpoint is MetaFilter, which has been around since 1999 and you can find comments from waaaaaaaaaaay back very easily, it’s all indexed for searching quite well.

This is a really interesting idea, sitting here reading the website. The main issue for current artists with deals with record labels would be needing to re-negotiate rights so they are allowed to “distribute” it in such a way. But yes! I too have had the same thought for years about bittorrent as distributed cloud storage! Thank you for trying to make that a reality!
