I seem to have developed some kind of ADHD in adulthood, while also avoiding caffeine in recent years. Now, if I drink two cups of coffee, I come to four fours later with fifty new tabs in the browser, the system deeply in swap, two new projects started and abandoned, and nothing actually done. If I’m lucky, some system reconfiguration that I’ve been putting off for months, will finally be made.

Yeah, they only need to replace about fifty thousand GPL packages, and voila, Ubuntu’s laundered! Should take only about a hundred thousand years at this pace, very realistic.

Not really, Chromium’s version just increased by one with every release. It’s kinda the same as the second number in the semver designation.

Funny how Radcliffe, Wood and Pattinson, whom three I can barely tell apart, all seem to have went into weird indie films against their teenage image.

There are tons of utils to customize the MacOS UI, including lots of open-source ones and some that kick ass off anything on Linux or Windows. Anyone saying that MacOS can't be customized, has never used MacOS.

She's been previously driving in LMP2 for one year, where power:weight is almost two times better than in F1 Academy cars (until LMP2 apparently folded in some way). Both Formula Regional and F1 Academy were a downgrade for her. She's back in LMP2 this year, and is also a development driver for LMP Hypercar team Peugeot TotalEnergies.

Hammerspoon and Alfred are way better automation utils than alternatives in Windows or Linux. The absence of these two makes me weep regularly. Karabiner might be the best too, haven't looked into third-party Linux remapping utils yet. Both Cinnamon and KDE support only predefined remapping out of the box. HyperSwitch and a dozen other utils allow customizing cmd-tab switching, namely add switching between windows instead of apps. Native Clipy clipboard manager is way snappier than CopyQ. At least for Windows there's Ditto. There's even an util called Mos fixing the fact that apps with foreign UI frameworks don't understand the mouse scrolling speed properly, and treat the mouse and the touchpad differently. Which is also present in Windows. You know about the touchbar? MTMR allows custom buttons on the touchbar, with custom actions. I've used it to connect/disconnect bluetooth headphones or hand them over to the phone (which was also set up as an Alfred command and as buttons on the phone itself, with bidirectional logic everywhere). Shortcat allows keyboard access to arbitrary UI elements in the active window: sorta like Vimium for browsers, but you type a bit of the text label instead of a two-letter shortcut. Hazel automatically processes files saved in particular folders, with particular rules — like the downloads. It can e.g. rename, move, or tag them. By the way, did you know that MacOS has tags for files while Windows and Linux have jackshit? MacOS' Cocoa UI framework allows addressing any element in an app's window via xpath (iirc) and manipulate them, if given accessibility permissions from the user. Which permits doing a lot of UI automation without fiddling with mouse coordinates and faking clicks. And can be done with native AppleScript (although I'd prefer that they properly supported JXA instead). By the way, more than a few apps provide their own support for AppleScript, such that for example you can access notes in Evernote with it. P.S. I also forgot about Automator, which is a first-party app by Apple, bundled with MacOS, that allows creating custom workflows for particular files, apps, or whatever. Neither Windows nor Linux ship with anything remotely like this, and even third-party apps in Win/Lin suck in comparison. iOS also has something similar with the Shortcuts app, while Google phones have the Assistant, which afaik can't work without phoning home.

Voyager is heavy on memory, it's killed by the system half of the times you want to use the browser for a minute. And doesn't remember where you were. Although it actually doesn't mark posts as read, afaik without regard to the profile setting. Because it hides the posts instead. So they should probably be visible in search.

you're talking about Dawkins or the person I was conversing with

The commenter.

The difference between you and them is they're saying it doesn't matter whether Jesus or God actually physically ever existed and actually did what's ascribed to them — but, if people believe that they do or did then Jesus and God effectively exist(ed) as far as people can tell. It's kind of a variation on solipsism where the noosphere dictates the effective perceived reality instead of any one individual mind.

As I mentioned, you can catch a further glimpse of their peculiar worldview if you peruse their previous comments, but this particular take here is probably the most comprehensible I've seen from them so far.

Thanks for the writeup, I have trouble falling asleep on some days, and rereading it a couple times will definitely help. Anyway, not sure what SUS is, but MacOS was indeed certified as a Unix. They also keep tools and APIs compatibility with FreeBSD so stuff is portable between them, and not just for shits and giggles.

I can’t even compute why anyone would want to do that, much less imagine ‘a lot of people’ doing it. Is that, like, throwing a pity bone to the less-electable guy? Could this be how the US got Trump? They know macOS as an “easier alternative for normies” Questionable amount of knowledge for techies if they aren’t aware that MacOS has a nearly full-blown FreeBSD inside. There’s a sorta-famous photo from CERN, from early 2010s, with a room full of people who work there, all with Macbooks. A dude I know went to CERN sometimes for his university, and came to me with a question of why he’s seen so many Macs there. I explained that it’s a Unix but with a GUI made for people.

if you’re used to the command line, a lot will seem familiar at a first glance Until one runs into “unknown option --help” and the multitude of other quality-of-life improvements that at least FreeBSD never ported. I frankly doubt it that they changed a noticeable amount in that department in the past twenty years.

I was starting to doubt my memory of this happening in Firefox Android, but I’m happy to report that I’ve gotten that issue just now. Opened a pic from a Lemmy comment in FF because it wasn’t showing in the app, and the tab was sitting there doing nothing. Had to close it and open another one. So you can judge how pressing this problem is for me, by it occurring once in 23 days (likely more) — while I was browsing on the phone quite a bit and opening images from Lemmy regularly due to the ISP’s shenanigans. But it does happen.

Well, I don’t know the details about portability, but there are a couple of pages in their documentation where they straight up say they keep the tools updated, and the APIs are the same except (which differences are in such areas of which I have never heard even with some rudimentary understanding of what Unix syscalls look like and what some parts of a kernel are).

It’s perfect when you know the application inside and out. A completely different story when you get dropped into a project that uses sixteen frameworks and libraries, including widely employed features that are barely documented. You get to do guesswork on whether this pattern is recognised by that library, while your system is constantly swapping under the weight of dozens of browser tabs with the docs and StackOverflows.

No, that issue definitely occurs in Firefox Android sometimes. The tab just gets stuck and does nothing. Has been happening for years, in fact, so it’s not something new. Might be due to some specific settings, but I like my settings and the problem doesn’t pop up too often, so eh. Desktop Firefox also gets this sometimes, actually. The tab just doesn’t load until I bash ‘enter’ on the address bar, or create a new tab. Since afaik Firefox uses its Gecko engine on both platforms, the issue could be in the engine rather than the UI.
